MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team notched its first victory of the 2017 season taking down the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist in extra innings, 7-5.

This victory marked win number 161 at UAM for head coach John Harvey as well, making him the all-time wins record holder in Arkansas-Monticello Baseball history, passing the late Carl Preston.

UAM (1-2) led throughout most of this game against the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist (0-4), starting off with a home-run to left field by senior Guy Halbert in the top of the second inning. This was followed with a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Lathan McFadden to give the Weevils the 2-0 lead.

Arkansas-Monticello added two more runs the following inning after a McFadden sac fly, Nick Piraino singled to bring in one run. The senior shortstop Piraino added his second RBI of the day with a sac bunt in the seventh to give UAM the 5-3 advantage.

Ouachita went on to tie the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning however, and would send this match-up into extra innings. The Weevils just needed to top of the 10th to reclaim the lead after an Andres Rios double to left center brought in two runs to seal the game up at 7-5.

Dawson Moser (1-0) was credited with the win in the contest, throwing 2.0 innings at the end of the ballgame, and recorded four strikeouts.

The Weevils will return to the field next this Friday as they face off against Southern Arkansas on Feb. 10 at Weevils Field with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
