PARAGOULD – The Lyon Scots had a 16-point second-half lead dwindle down to a last-second missed three-pointer in a 73-70 win over the Crowley Ridge College Pioneers on Monday night at the Carter Activities Center in Paragould.

<dfn>Grant Patterson</dfn> scored 19 points and had seven rebounds, <dfn>Trenton Bell</dfn> and <dfn>Ben Keton</dfn> both scored 15 points each and <dfn>John Paul Morgan</dfn> put in 14 points and had 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games. Lyon (5-8) made 15-of-16 free throws in the game and shot 43 percent from the field. The Scots were 4-of-16 on 3-pointers.

Morgan tied the game early with a three-point play and Bell hit a three-pointer from the right wing. Morgan completed his second traditional three-point play for a 12-5 lead and Keton tipped in a missed shot for a seven-point lead. <dfn>Jonathan Iliya</dfn> banked in a shot off a pass from Bell. Crowley’s Ridge came back to get within three points, but Bell made two baskets, <dfn>Luke Bridges</dfn> made a shot inside and Keton put in two free throws and a 3-pointer for a 27-20 lead.

Patterson made two free throws and Keton added two from the line, then Morgan scored inside for a 35-22 lead for Lyon. The Pioneers (1-13) got to within four points, but a <dfn>Gavin Brunson</dfn> passed to Keton for a dunk. Patterson added two more free throws and Brunson scored on a Euro-step move to the basket for a layup just before time expired to put the Scots up 43-33 at halftime.

Keton hit a jumper to start the scoring in the second half, then Patterson, who scored 15 points in the second half alone, got two baskets to fall on drives through the lane. Bell scored inside and Patterson put in two free throws for a 53-38 lead.

Patterson made a jumper and made two more free throws. Bell’s 3-pointer with 13:09 left to play put Lyon up by 16 points, 60-44. Iliya turned for a hook shot and Patterson scored three more points, but the Scots were outscored 12-2 by the Pioneers. A three-point play and a basket off a steal got Crowley’s Ridge to within one point, 67-66 with 5:34 to go.

Patterson scored on a drive, Morgan made a jumper and Iliya scored on a layup after Crowley’s Ridge missed two free throws to tie the game. Lyon held a 73-68 lead with 3:21 to play in the game and the Pioneers got an offensive rebound basket to cut the lead to three at the 2:51 mark.

Although neither team scored again, Crowley’s Ridge missed four 3-point attempts in the final two minutes of the game. The Pioneers’ last 3-point miss came as time expired.

Bo Roberson led Crowley’s Ridge with 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Braxton Cousins had 17 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.

PARAGOULD – Playing their third game in less than a week, Central Baptist College men’s basketball took on the Pioneers of Crowley’s Ridge tonight at the Carter Activities Center. CBC (3-2) used a hot shooting first half to claim a big lead and they never trailed, beating CRC (1-6) 87-62.

Tedrick Wolfe (SR/DeWitt, Ark.) led five Mustangs in double figures with 16 points. Zach Hudson (SR/Jackson, Miss.) notched his second career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 17 rebounds while also blocking four shots. Brevin Brimble (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) chipped in with 12, and TaJuan Johnson(SR/Chicago, Ill.) and Kelvin Robinson (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) both had 11 apiece. CBC shot 56 percent from the floor and from three in the first half and finished 50 percent for the game from the floor and 33 percent from three while making 16 of their 21 free throw attempts. The Mustangs also dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Pioneers 58-29.

Brimble made the first basket of the game, a three 25 seconds into the contest, and CBC set sail from there, racing out to a 49-27 lead at the half. CBC never led by less than 15 the rest of the game and cruised to their third straight 25-plus point win.

The Mustangs have a quick turnaround as they will be back on the floor tomorrow night at Reddin Fieldhouse for a contest against Ecclesia. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. with limited attendance policies in place

PARAGOULD – Looking to end a three-match losing skid, Central Baptist College volleyball was on the road tonight taking on the Pioneers of Crowley’s Ridge College. CBC (5-5) earned the season sweep of CRC (0-3), beating the Pioneers 3-0 by scores of 25-12, 25-19 & 26-24.

Hailey Webb (FR/Benton, Ark.) led the Mustangs in kills with 12 while Emoree Martin (FR/Hot Springs, Ark.) added 11. Taylor Folsom (SO/North Little Rock, Ark.) had a team-high 20 assists and Molly Murphy (FR/Palm Springs, Calif.) joined her in double figures with 13 while Alizea Garza (SR/Odessa, Texas) had 20 digs, Martin completed a double-double with 13 of her own, the second double-double of her career, and Mikayla Lawrence (FR/Beebe, Ark.) had 11 digs. As a team, CBC had 37 kills and hit .122 while CRC had 27 kills and hit .031.

CBC won the first two points of the match before Crowley’s Ridge tied it at two with the next two points. The Mustangs took over from there, closing on a 23-10 run to win the first set.

Set two opened with a kill from Folsom and then three straight points by CRC for their first lead of the night. CBC came back, however, winning the next four points in a row and they never trailed again in the set, leading by as many as five points before winning 25-19.

The final set featured nine ties and three lead changes with neither team leading by a margin of more than four. With the score tied at 24, back-to-back kills by Martin and Folsom ended the match and gave CBC the sweep on the night and their fifth victory of the season.

Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to Walnut Ridge on Saturday for an American Midwest Conference match against the Eagles of Williams Baptist. First serve is slated for noon at the Southerland Mabee Center

CONWAY – Stepping out of American Midwest Conference play for the final time in the 2019-20 season, Central Baptist College women’s basketball hosted the Pioneers of Crowley’s Ridge tonight at Reddin Fieldhouse. A pair of Lady Mustangs, Holly Allen (JR/Cabot, Ark.) and Kory Westerman (SR/Greenbrier, Ark.), both had history making nights as CBC (10-4) cruised to a 102-49 win over CRC (5-12).

Allen finished the game with 34 points, including a new single-game program record with 10 three-point field goals made, and moved into third place on the all-time scoring list, passing Karli Kenley to get there, bringing her to 830 for her career. Westerman posted the first triple-double ever in women’s basketball history, scoring 10 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and making a single-game program record 11 steals, becoming the first player in program history as well to record more than 10 steals in a game. Beyond Allen and Westerman, four other Lady Mustangs finished in double figures scoring, with Aaliyah Cash (SO/Vilonia, Ark.) posting 11 points, and Sierra Carrier (SR/Eugene, Ore.), Macie Hopkins (FR/Pangburn, Ark.) and Grace Coates (JR/Two Rivers, Ark.) all finishing with 10. The Lady Mustangs were +25 on the glass (49-24) and forced 34 turnovers compared to committing just 13. CBC never trailed in the contest, with the score tied only once, 3-3, early in the first quarter.

The first quarter was owned by the Mustangs, who raced out to a 19-8 lead before settling back to 26-17 at the end of one. Crowley’s Ridge knocked the lead down to six, 26-20, early in the second quarter, before Allen hit a three to stretch the lead back to nine. A layup by Coates two possessions later stretched it to 31-20 before a mini 4-0 run by the Pioneers brought the lead down to 31-24. Another Allen three made the lead 34-24 and the Lady Mustangs closed the quarter on a 13-0 run, holding CRC without a field goal for the final 5:29 to into the locker room with a 43-24 lead.

Allen would open the second half with another three to make it 37-24. Westerman’s historic steal, her 10th of the game to break the former single game record, came at the 6:15 mark in the third quarter and setup a basket by Cash 18 seconds later to make the score 56-31. CBC would lead 67-38 after three.

The fourth quarter was a very historic quarter for the Lady Mustangs. Westerman got her 10th rebound of the night with 8:52 left in the fourth to give her a double-double and she completed the triple-double at the free throw line 10 seconds later, knocking down a pair of free throws, for points nine & 10 to complete the historic feat. Allen, who entered the fourth quarter with 16 points, scored 18 points in the fourth on six three-pointers to finish with her 34. The historic 10th three came at the 1:41 mark left in the game and put CBC up 96-47.

Next up for CBC is a visit to No. 12 Columbia on Thursday night for an AMC tilt. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. and you can catch live coverage of the game by liking Central Baptist College Athletics on Facebook and following @gocbcmustangs on Twitter and Instagram.

Erica Ewing, Sports Information Director

PARAGOULD – The Crowley’s Ridge College Lady Pioneer volleyball team hosted Lincoln Christian University and Lyon College in their home opening tri-match of the 2018-2019 season.

CRC took A.I.I. conference opponent, Lincoln Christian, to five sets but ultimately lost 24-26, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 14-16.

Then in the final match of the day, the Lady Pioneers fell to the Scots of Lyon 19-25, 25-14, 15-25, 24-26.

Crowley’s Ridge vs. Lincoln Christian:

Game one started off like you would hope all conference games to; with several momentum changes and back and forth play. Crowley’s Ridge had to battle through some reception and bald handling errors to stay in the game. But thanks to solid serving by freshman Kaitlyn Perkins, the Pioneers took a 20-18 lead. The Red Lions continued to hang around though, and took the first set 26-24.

The second set was looking much like the first until junior Bailey Loge delivered a momentum swinging dig, followed by a powerful kill by freshman Olivia Deckelman to give the Pioneers a 23-22 lead. However, LCU took advantage of a few CRC mental errors to pull out the 25-23 win.

Crowley’s Ridge came out determined in sets three and four. Sophomore Ashley Pyeatt led the charge in both sets with great jump serves and good play around the net. Freshman Bailey Tosh contributed some strong serving of her own and assisted on several of the Pioneer points. And, Olivia Deckelman continued to smack a few key kills to help CRC earn 25-15 and 25-20 victories.

It all came down to a decisive fifth set. The Lady Pioneers began with some momentum, but the Red Lions would not quit. Freshman Claire Johnson punched a clutch ace serve to tie the score at 14 all, but Lincoln Christian scored the next two points to win the game and match 16-14.

Crowley’s Ridge vs. Lyon College:

In the opening set, both teams struggled to find their groove early on as they traded kills and errors. Lyon ended up stringing a few points together late in the game to win 25-19.

The second game was a different story. Crowley’s Ridge came out playing like they were on a mission. Claire Johnson started the serving game as the Pioneers jumped to a 6-0 lead and they never looked back going on to win 25-14.

Set number three proved to swing the other way in favor of the Scots. Lyon jumped to a 6-1 lead and carried that momentum to a 25-15 victory.

In a must win fourth set, the Lady Pioneers put it all on the line but fell just short. After Lyon College lengthened their lead to 19-10, it looked like the game would be over soon but CRC showed a fighting spirit as they continued to cut and eventually take the lead 21-20. The game would go on in a back and forth fashion until the Scots inched their way to a 26-24 win.

You can catch the Crowley’s Ridge Lady Pioneers back in action at home on Tuesday, August 28 against the Mustangs of Central Baptist College at 7:00 p.m.!

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Lady Pioneers entered the day as the fourth seed in the 2018 A.I.I. Softball Conference Championships. They had to face off against the first seed in the conference, who is also the No. 1 team in the nation – Georgia Gwinnett College. Crowley’s Ridge did a good job of holding the best team in the nation to three runs through the first four innings, but ultimately gave up a big fifth inning and lost 8-0.

The Pioneer defense gave up one run in the first inning and two more in the second inning, but then held the No. 1 Grizzlies scoreless in the next two innings. Freshman pitcher Sammi Henry forced a fly out to center to start the bottom half of the third. After a CRC error allowed a runner on first base, April Kennedy tracked down a pop up in foul territory down the left field line. Then in a great heads up play, Kennedy caught the GGC runner trying to advance to second after the catch and she gunned her down as Morgen Gann laid on the tag to end the inning in a double play.

Crowley’s Ridge recorded a three up, three down inning in the bottom of the fourth. Henry struck out Georgia Gwinnett’s Tori Robinson who was hitting 0.391 on the season with only eight previous strikeouts on the year. The next batter flied out to Bre’Anna Warren in center field and then the final batter of the inning flied out to left-center.

The Georgia Gwinnett offense proved to be too much for the Pioneers in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Grizzlies connected on five hits, including two triples that pushed across five runs to end the game.

Crowley’s Ridge struggled at the plate against the impressive pitching by GGC’s Taylor Hansis who completed the no-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Erik Holth, Sports Information Director

CONWAY – Seeking to run their win streak to five games and sweep the season series, Central Baptist College softball welcomed Crowley’s Ridge College to City of Colleges Park this afternoon. CBC (24-17) led early in both games and got excellent pitching, sweeping the Pioneers (17-21) 8-0, 8-1.

Rachel Gregory (SO/North Little Rock, Ark.) got the win in game one and Brooke Trout (FR/Blytheville, Ark.) followed with a win in game two. The Mustangs clubbed four home runs, all in game two, courtesy of Allison Seats (FR/Jacksonville, Ark.), Anna Beth Duncan (FR/Cabot, Ark.), Cali Lankford (JR/Perryville, Ark.) and Rachael Jones (SO/Conway, Ark.).

GAME ONE – CBC 8, CRC 0 (FIVE INNINGS)

Neither team scored in the first inning, but CBC would pounce in the second. Allison Skelton (SR/Prairie Grove, Ark.) led off the inning reaching on an error. Pinch runner Allison Seats subsequently stole second and then moved to third on a sac bunt by Beth Jones (SR/Hope, Ark.). Seats would then score on a wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Brianna Nunn(JR/Missouri City, Texas) would follow by reaching second on an error and stealing third the scoring on Gabrielle Mueller(SR/Taylor Ridge, Ill.)’s groundout to make it 2-0. A walk to Alyssa Estrada (SO/Houston, Texas) would setup back-to-back run scoring doubles by Kaitlyn Goike (FR/Magnolia, Texas) and Kinley Burrows (SO/Jacksonville, Ark.) to put CBC on top 4-0 and Hunter Clark (SR/Sheridan, Ark.) drove in Burrows on an RBI single for the final run of the inning. RBIs by Estrada in the third, Beth Jones in the fourth, and the game-ending single by Goike in the fifth were all the Mustangs needed. Gregory threw a complete game three-hitter, walking just two and posting a season-high five strikeouts.

GAME TWO – CBC 8, CRC 1

Game two started much like game one, with neither team scoring in the first and CBC capitalizing in the second. Cali Lankford would single with one out and score two batters later on Skelton’s double to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead. Aleighu Porterfield (SO/Beebe, Ark.) would then double home Skelton to make it 2-0 through two innings. Back-to-back homers from Seats, her team-leading 10th of the season, and Duncan, her second, made it 4-0 CBC through three innings. No runs crossed the plate in the fourth and Lankford extended the lead to 5-0 in the fifth with her sixth home run of the season. The Pioneers would cut the lead to 5-1 in the sixth thanks to a pair of hits, but Trout would get out of the inning with a runner on and no further damage. The final three CBC runs came on Rachael Jones’ sixth home run of the season to bring the score to its final total. Trout threw a complete game, surrendering just three hits and one run, issuing just two walks while striking out four.

UP NEXT

The Mustangs have Tuesday off but they return to the field on Wednesday for an American Midwest Conference doubleheader with the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State. First pitch at City of Colleges Park is set for 2 p.m.
