MONROE, La. – The Arkansas State baseball team registered its best offensive game in school history as the team scored a school-record 31 runs in a 31-7 victory at ULM Saturday afternoon at Warhawk Field for its first league win of the season.

The 31 runs broke the school record of 28, which was set in a 28-13 win over Memphis to conclude the 1992 season, and A-State (9-11, 1-4 SBC) also tied the school records for home runs in a game (8) and hits (26). The eight homers tied the mark set at UALR on April 10, 2005 and the Red Wolves entered the game with just seven on the year. The 26 hits tied a record set in 1994 versus Little Rock. Additionally, the team drove in 29 of those runs to break the record of 26 in the 1992 game against Memphis.

On a national scale, the eight home runs are tied for the second most in a NCAA Division I game this season, while the 31 runs are tied for the fourth most in the nation this year. Arkansas State tallied 54 total bases in the game for the second most in school history and the second most in the country so far in 2018.

10 different players picked up hits in the contest, while nine drove in runs. Tobias Johnson went 4-for-6 with a career-best six RBI as the Curtis, Wash., native hit two home runs, tripled, and scored four runs. Winston Welch also notched a four-hit effort for a career high and hit the first two round trippers of his career. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Welch drove in a career-best four runs and scored a career-high four times.

Grant Hawkins drove in a career-high four runs and tied a career high with four hits, while Jeremy Brown tied his career high with four RBI. Kyle MacDonald tied a career best with four hits, drove in three runs, and hit his third homer of the season. Casey Vaughan hit his first home run of the season and scored five runs to account for the most scored by an A-State player this season. Cullen Ray connected for a home run in the game and drove in four, while fellow freshman Jaylon Deshazier hit his third home run of the season.

Not to be lost in all of the offensive accolades is A-State starter Nate Alberius, who limited the Warhawks (12-10, 2-3 SBC) to just three runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. All three runs came around to score in the bottom of the fourth to trim the A-State lead to 17-3 at the time. Payton Lannon tossed an inning in relief, while Chase Nix allowed two runs over the final two frames to finish the game.

The scoring began early and often for A-State as the squad put up nine runs in the top of the first on seven hits, all singles. The first seven reached base against ULM starter Trey Jeans before he was pulled in favor of Richard Hebert. The nine runs were the most in a single inning for the team since May 25, 2017 when A-State scored 11 against Georgia State in the bottom of the fifth in the opening round of the SBC Tournament.

Vaughan connected on his solo shot in the top of the second before seven more runs scored in the top of the third to push the score to 17-0. Johnson tripled home the first run of the third before MacDonald (solo) and Welch (two-run) cranked home runs later in the frame. The team didn’t score in the fourth, but put up eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to move ahead 25-3. Johnson hit a three-run shot in the fifth, while Ray smoked a three-run homer to left-center field in the sixth.

Welch and Johnson hit solo shots in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, while ULM scored two in the seventh to set the score at 27-5. A-State, just two runs shy of setting a new school record in the ninth, got the two runs it needed when Deshazier belted a two-run dinger to put the squad ahead 29-5. Two more runs came around before ULM added two in the bottom half to set the final at 31-7.

Arkansas State, who was shut out in Friday’s game 2-0, and ULM play the rubber game Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Warhawk Field is set for 1 p.m.

The Red Wolves improved to 5-1 at home this season while running their overall record to 6-6. They claimed their 11th consecutive win over ULM, which fell to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in league play.

A-State, which matched its second highest scoring output of the season, shot 38.9 percent from the field. Although ULM was able to post a higher field goal percentage at .453, the Warhawks took 19 fewer shots and committed 23 turnovers to A-State’s 15. The Red Wolves also made 16-of-21 free throws, while Louisiana-Monroe was just 7-of-14 at the charity stripe.

While A-State raced out to 15-4 advantage six minutes into the game, ULM closed the first quarter on 9-0 run to pull within two points at 15-13. The Warhawks were able to take their first lead of the game at 18-16 early in the second quarter and still led 26-25 with three minutes before the break, but the Red Wolves went on an 8-1 run to take a 33-27 halftime advantage.

Hopkins scored all of her 10 points in the third quarter, fueling a 10-minute stretch by the Red Wolves that saw them outscore ULM 24-17 to take a 57-44 lead into the fourth. A-State’s lead swelled to as much as 18 points (53-35) with 3:15 left in the third quarter. The Warhawks were unable to get closer than 11 points in the fourth.

· A-State won its Sun Belt Conference opener for the sixth consecutive season, while also improving to 16-11 all-time in such games.

· The Red Wolves now stand 11-2 in SBC openers played at home.

· Arkansas State collected its 11th win over ULM in its last 12 matchups, running its all-time record versus the Warhawks to 27-14.

· A-State improved to 5-0 this season when at least three players score in double digits. Since 2012-13, the Red Wolves stand 69-26 in outings where it has three or more players score at least 10 points.

· Including tonight’s game, Arkansas State is 6-0 when scoring at least 60 points.

· Lauren Bradshaw scored a career-high 24 points. She reached double figures for the third time this season and 11th time of her career. The senior made a career-high 10 free throws to help her reach her record-scoring night.

· Tahlon Hopkins scored a season-high 10 points (all in the third quarter), but reached double digits for the 15th time of her career. She also hauled in a season-high six rebounds

· A-State’s 76 points matched its second most this season for the third time.

· The Red Wolves’ bench outscored the opponent’s reserves for the eighth time this season.

“Fortunately things started going our way in the third quarter and we were able to start making some shots and got a little bit of separation from them,” head coach Brian Boyer said. “Lauren was great tonight and played strong and did a phenomenal on the boards. We were really pleased and happy to see Tahlon have a good game. She has had a tough go of it and it just seemed like the ball would not go in for her, but she stuck with it and kept playing hard and hopefully this will help her get going.

“The biggest thing is that we got the win at home. This is a long 18-game schedule and you can’t win the league with the first game but you can certainly put yourself behind with a loss at home and it just feels good to get that first one out of the way.”

Arkansas State remains at home for its next game, hosting Louisiana on Sunday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m.

From A-State Sports
Christopher Graddy, Assistant Director for Media Relations

JONESBORO, Ark. – Freshman guard Jada Ford scored 12 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth period, leading the Arkansas State women’s basketball team to a second-half surge that resulted in a 71-56 win over Louisiana-Monroe in both team’s Sun Belt Conference opener Thursday night at the Convocation Center.

A-State won its sixth consecutive Sun Belt opener while improving to 16-11 all-time in such games. The Red Wolves (3-10, 1-0) also collected their 11th straight win over the Warhawks (3-9, 0-1) and brought their home record this year to an even 2-2.

“I liked our effort from start to finish and we know played hard from start and all the way through and I think a lot of had to do with how we wore them down and got them into foul trouble, which was significant,” Boyer said. “Another key area was the turnover battle where we only turned it over 10 times and they are a team that turns it over a lot and they only had six at the half, but we really stepped it up in the second half and got them to make 12 turnovers and we were able to take advantage of that.”

Including Ford, the Red Wolves had two players score in double figures as senior guard Brittany Fowler added 13 points. Fowler also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds, matching junior forward Lauren Bradshaw for the most by an A-State player on the night.

The first half featured 11 lead changes and ended in a 33-33 tie, but the Red Wolves outscored the Warhawks 18-11 and 20-12 in the third and fourth periods, respectively. A-State slightly improved its shooting percentage in the second half while ULM’s slightly dropped, but the Red Wolves scored 16 of their 18 points off turnovers in the second half.

Arkansas State opened the third period by scoring nine of the first 11 points as it claimed a 42-35 lead with 6:02 remaining. It built its lead to as many as eight before closing with a seven-point advantage, 51-44.

The fourth also began with an Arkansas State run as it outscored ULM 12-4 over the period’s first five minutes to open up a 63-48 lead. ULM was able to cut A-State’s lead to 11 points with 3:46 left, but couldn’t get any closer.

Ogo Obinabo played a pivotal role throughout the night and finished with a career-high seven points and nine rebounds and also was successful in drawing foul from the ULM defense which played a key factor with foul trouble late in the game.

“I’ll take seven points and nine rebounds from Ogo any day of the week,” Boyer said. “She really played well and the key with her is that she has also been aggressive but now she is starting to score off offensive rebounds and even though she struggled at the foul line she got their post players into foul trouble and that was huge.”

A-State finished the game with a .410 shooting percentage to ULM’s .359. Although the Warhawks held a 43-41 advantage on the boards, the Red Wolves committed eight fewer turnovers while dishing out three more assists.

Arkansas State returns to action Saturday, Dec. 31, with a 2:30 p.m. home game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
