Lyon Athletics
Matthew Jagodzinsky, Sports Information Director

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Lyon College baseball team hit past Indiana Wesleyan as the Scots’ offense exploded for 12 runs on 13 hits in a 12-2 victory against the Wildcats in the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round on Tuesday afternoon. The Scots advanced in the Lawrenceville Bracket after winning the elimination game and now stand at 37-16, while Indiana Wesleyan’s season came to an end with a 37-10 record.

GAME FLOW

The Scots jumped out to a commanding, 10-0, lead after five innings in the books. Lyon put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI single by Kyle West and a three-run double by Tanner Seibel. Lyon added two runs in the second on a two-run single by West and two more runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Zane Pritchard and an RBI single by Easton Moore. The scoring continued for the Scots with a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Gunner Starr drove in a run with a single in the fourth as West added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

After Indiana Wesleyan scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, the Scots got the runs back in the bottom of the eighth.

Tyson Campbell earned the win on the bump as he tossed five scoreless innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts. Campbell improved to 13-2 on the year with the win. Campbell tied a pair of single-season records for the Lyon baseball program. His 13 wins are tied with Phillip May, who won 13 games during the 2002 season. Campbell now has 116 strikeouts this season, which is tied with Griffin Glaude, who struck out 116 batters in the 2015 season. Evan Dobler added two innings of scoreless relief.

West had a big day at the plate as he finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Andrew Sauceda, Moore, Starr and Seibel added two hits each in the game.

WHAT’S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots will face No. 5-seed Point in another elimination game tonight at 6 p.m. (central time).

BILLINGS, MONT. – John Brown took off to a 14-0 lead to start the game, but the William Woods would not go away.

WWU used a 20-9 fourth quarter run to come away with a 64-61 victory over JBU in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

The Owls trailed through three quarters, but opened the final stanza scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the period to knot the game at 54-apiece. Bailey Rollins’ basket gave WWU (22-11) its first lead of the game at 56-54.

From there the pace slowed and Baily Cameron’s three-pointer with 1:22 remaining put JBU (23-9) back on top, 61-58, and looked to give the Lady Eagles the momentum back. But 30 seconds later, Peyton Greenlee countered with a three of her own and the game was again tied.

Then Rollins stole the ball and WWU had the ball for the final possession. Kelsey Scherder drained a three-pointer with one second left on the clock and the Owls completed the comeback.

Scherder had 19 points on the night, a team high. Greenlee had 17 more and each had six rebounds.

Cameron led the way for JBU with 21 points and eight boards. Luize Skrastina put in 13 for the Lady Eagles.

With back-to-back upsets under its belt, William Woods moves into the quarterfinal to face the winner of Vanguard (Calif.) and Montana State-Northern on Saturday at 9 p.m. CDT.

BILLINGS, MONT. – Baily Cameron’s three-pointer with 52 seconds left put her team up by five and gave the Lady Eagles just enough room to hold off the Ravens.

Cameron made free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win and No. 4 seed John Brown got past No. 5 seed Benedictine, 74-72, in the opening round of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship.

The Ravens got three-pointers from Ali Taff and Kristen Murphy in the final minute, but ran out of time at the end.

JBU (23-8) held a two-point advantage at halftime, a lead that would hold as the teams each scored 25 points in the third quarter and each scored 19 in the fourth. The 4-5 matchup couldn’t have been more even.

JBU’s Cameron had a game-high 27 points and shot 9-of-16 from the field.

Kodee Powell had 17 points and four assists for the Lady Eagles.

Lyon Sports
Tyler Scott, Assistant Director of Sports Information

BILLINGS, Mont. – In the first round of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Tournament, the third-seeded Lyon College women’s basketball team used a big fourth quarter to claw past No. 6 seed Pikeville University (Ky.) Thursday morning at the Rimrock Arena. The Scots went on a 16-1 run at one point in the final period, and survived a late surge from the Bears to advance to the second round.

The Scots used a balanced effort from their guards as Liz Henderson led the team with 14 points and seven assists. Sarah Elkins finished with 12 points, while Madison Riley and Elliot Taylor chipped in 10 apiece.

Pikeville was led by Kandice Porter and Devin Conley’s 13 points.

Lyon improves to 28-5 on the season and continues their run in the National Tournament. Pikeville’s season comes to an end, as they finish with a 21-11 record.

BY THE NUMBERS

16.7 – Lyon has been strong on the defensive end all year, and today they were able to hold Pikeville to just 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Bears were limited to just 3-of-18 from long range, and shot 38.2 percent on 26-of-68 from the floor. Lyon went 9-of-23 from long range for 39.1 percent, led by four from Henderson.

19 – The Scots totaled 19 assists in the game led by seven from Henderson. Kiara Moore finished with four, while Riley had three. Pikeville was limited to just 11.

40.0 – Lyon finished shooting 26-of-65 for 40.0 percent in the game. The Scots picked up the pace in the second half by shooting 14-of-32 for 43.7 percent.

42 – Both teams rebounded the ball well, but the Scots grabbed the advantage with 42 in the game. Elkins had a team high eight rebounds, while Riley and Moore had five apiece. Taylor and Hailey Hastings each had four.

6 – Lyon blocked six total shots in the game, with Moore leading the team with three. Henderson, Riley and Hastings each had one. Pikeville entered the game ranked fourth in the nation with 146 total blocks, but had just three in the game.

GAME FLOW

The first quarter was close as neither team could quite break away for a big lead. Henderson broke a 10-10 tie for the Scots after she hit a three-pointer, followed by a basket from the Bears as the Scots would take a 13-12 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter proved to be just as close, as the Scots had a 26-21 lead at the 3:40 mark. Pikeville then went on a 9-3 run to close out the period and take a 30-29 lead.

Pikeville would try to build a big lead in the third quarter, but the Scots were able to keep pace with the stingy Bears’ defense. With the game tied at 36, Hastings, Ali Tucker and Moore scored seven straight points for Lyon to give the team a little bit of breathing room at 43-36 with 3:10 left in the quarter. Lyon would lead 45-42 after three quarters of play.

Lyon would go on a huge run in the fourth quarter as they shot 8-for-13 in the period. With an early quarter lead of 45-44, the Scots built their lead to double-digits as a plethora of Scots in Kelsey Smith, Riley, Elkins, Taylor and Henderson helped Lyon take a 61-45 lead. Pikeville would make one last run to try and keep it close, but the Scots held them back for the 12-point win.

WHAT’S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon will play the winner of No. 2 seed Westmont College (Calif.) and No. 7 seed Louisiana State University-Shreveport, Friday at 4:30 p.m.
