LAFAYETTE, La. – <dfn>Caleb Fields</dfn> drained a game-tying 3-pointer with three-tenths of a second remaining to send the game to overtime, but the Arkansas State men’s basketball team fell in overtime, 83-77, Thursday against Louisiana.

A-State drops to 10-4 on the season and 1-1 in Sun Belt play while the Ragin’ Cajuns improved to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in league play.

<dfn>Norchad Omier</dfn> had game-highs with 29 points and 17 rebounds for his ninth double-double this season and 24th career. <dfn>Markise Davis</dfn> joined Omier in double figures with 11 points while <dfn>Caleb Fields</dfn> had nine points, seven assists and five rebounds. <dfn>Marquis Eaton</dfn> scored six of his nine points and the charity stripe and <dfn>Desi Sills</dfn> added eight points, four assists and four rebounds. Kobe Julien led the Ragin’ Cajuns with 20 points with Theo Akwuba and Dou Gueye registering double-doubles.

The first 20 minutes had seven lead changes with the Ragin’ Cajuns leading for much of the half. A-State forced eight Ragin’ Cajuns miscues, but the hosts held a 16-4 advantage in points off turnovers for the half. After six first half turnovers, the Red Wolves committed just three turnovers over the final 25 minutes.

Trailing much of the second half, A-State saw the Ragin’ Cajuns used an 8-0 run to lead 62-53 with 8:36 to play. The Red Wolves clawed back with Davis draining a corner 3-pointer to tie the game at 66 with 3:40 left in regulation. An alley-oop from Fields to Omier gave A-State a 68-67 lead, the first lead for the Red Wolves since an 11-10 lead at 12:46 of the first half.

Louisiana tallied the next five points, but A-State refused to go away. After the Ragin’ Cajuns split a pair of free throws with 13.3 seconds remaining, A-State had a chance to tie and Fields drained the game-tying 3-pointer from the right wing with 0.3 showing on the clock. The game went to overtime, the first for A-State since January of last season and the Ragin’ Cajuns outscored the Red Wolves 8-4 for the victory. A-State was limited to 1-of-8 shooting in the extra frame while the Ragin’ Cajuns scored four of their eight points at the charity stripe.

Behind 17 rebounds from Omier, A-State out-rebounded the Ragin’ Cajuns 41-40. The Red Wolves logged 15 assists on 25 made field goals, but finished 35.2 percent (25-71) from the field and 27.8 percent (5-18) beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Ragin’ Cajuns shot 50.0 percent (30-60) from the field and 35.7 percent (5-14) from 3-point range. A-State was 22-of-27 (.815) at the line while the hosts were 18-of-24 (.750). The Ragin’ Cajuns outscored A-State 42-30 in the paint and 17-8 off turnovers.

A-State continues the road trip Saturday at ULM. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Fant-Ewing Coliseum with the matchup airing on ESPN+ and across the EAB Red Wolves Sports Network and flagship station 107.9 KFIN.

A-State Athletics

STATESBORO, Ga. – For the second consecutive game, the Arkansas State women’s basketball team faced a double-digit second-half deficit on the road on Thursday at Georgia Southern.

However, A-State (7-7, 0-1 SBC) could not make it two straight come-from-behind road triumphs, falling 84-75 to the Eagles (10-3, 1-0) at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Red Wolves trailed by as much as 13 early in the fourth quarter and clawed back to cut it to one with under 2 minutes remaining, but strong free-throw shooting late allowed the Eagles to hold on for the win to open Sun Belt Conference play.

<dfn>Lauryn Pendleton</dfn> led a trio of double-digit scorers for A-State with 16 points off the bench to go along with 6 rebounds. <dfn>Trinitee Jackson</dfn> dropped 10 points and 6 boards while <dfn>Keya Patton</dfn> also chipped in 10 points. <dfn>Morgan Wallace</dfn> was the game’s top rebounder, grabbing 10 off the glass.

A-State shot 39.7 percent from the field on 25 of 63 shooting and connected on 19 of 26 from the free-throw line (73.1 percent). Every player who saw time for the Red Wolves scored in the contest.

Georgia Southern’s Mya Burns led all players with 23 points, while Ja’nya Love Hill added 13. Simone James and Thaniya Marks tallied 10 points apiece. James and Tsubasa Nisbet led the Eagles with 7 rebounds apiece as Georgia Southern out-rebounded A-State 45-39. The Eagles shot 43.1 percent (28 of 65) from the floor and 74.2 percent (23 of 31) from the charity stripe, including 10 of 12 in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles scored five of the game’s first seven points before A-State’s lone lead in the outing came midway through the quarter on a jumper by <dfn>Kiayra Ellis</dfn>. A 7-0 run put the Eagles ahead 14-8 before a Patton trey made it 18-15 late in the period. Georgia Southern led 21-15 after the first 10 minutes.

A Jackson layup knotted it up at 23-all to cap off an 8-2 run to open the second quarter, but the Eagles hit key shots down the stretch to own a five-point lead at halftime. A-State outscored Georgia Southern 22-21 in the quarter.

Georgia Southern managed to create some distance in the third quarter, leading by as much as 12 on a three by Daeja Holmes at the 1:08 mark that made it 65-53. After a <dfn>Jade Upshaw</dfn> corner three cut it back down to single digits, Love-Hill netted a jumper in the paint to give her team a 67-56 advantage entering the final quarter.

A lay-in by Lydia Freeman early in the fourth gave Georgia Southern its largest lead of the day at 69-56 but then A-State picked up the pressure defensively and began to battle back. Pendleton helped lead that charge with six points of a 13-2 stretch that made it a two-point contest with 2:50 to play. After a pair of Burns free throws made it 73-69, <dfn>Mailyn Wilkerson</dfn> found Patton in the corner off the inbounds for the three to make it 73-72 with 1:54 remaining.

That would be as close as it would get, however, as Georgia Southern closed on an 11-3 run that included eight free throws to close out the contest.

A-State returns home to host Louisiana at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, to open a four-game home stand. The Red Wolves were originally slated to ring in the new year at home against Georgia State on Saturday, but COVID-19 concerns within the GSU program caused the game in Jonesboro to be canceled.

Thursday’s game against the Ragin’ Cajuns will be broadcast on ESPN+, while the radio broadcast can be heard on the EAB Red Wolves Sports Network flagship station 95.3/96.9 The Ticket/970 AM.

Sun Belt Communications

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference works tirelessly to maintain an officiating program of the highest quality. The conference office and our members have high expectations for the work of our game officials.

Unfortunately, the last few seconds of the Little Rock at Louisiana men’s basketball game this evening were not managed properly by the officiating crew. Play should have been immediately stopped when an issue with the arena lighting occurred. The crew should have awarded Little Rock the ball out of bounds with five seconds on the clock to complete the last sequence. Regrettably, this did not occur.

Officiating is a very difficult job, but our schools, players, coaches and fans deserve the best and we will continue to strive to meet that standard.

Little Rock lost to Louisiana, 66-64.

Sun Belt Communications

NEW ORLEANS – The 2020 regular-season Sun Belt Conference football postseason awards were unveiled on Monday morning.

Coastal Carolina led in All-Sun Belt selections with 16, including 10 on the first team (five on offense; four on defense, one on special teams), followed by App State and Louisiana having 14 each. Georgia State finished with 10, the most ever selected from the program among the three teams, while Shamarious Gilmore is the program’s first four-time honoree.

SBC Co-champions and East Division champion Coastal Carolina claimed five of the top six honors, led by the Chanticleers’ redshirt freshman quarterback, Grayson McCall, being named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. McCall was joined by teammates’ redshirt senior defensive end Tarron Jackson, who was named Defensive Player of the Year, and junior cornerback D’Jordan Strong was named the Sun Belt’s Newcomer of the Year. Coastal’s head coach Jamey Chadwell earned Coach of the Year honors for the team’s performance. Arkansas State senior wide receiver Jonathan Adams Jr. was named Offensive Player of the Year. McCall, Jackson, Strong, and Adams Jr., also received All-Sun Belt First Team recognition.

Coastal’s McCall ranks eighth in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in points responsible for (176) and passing efficiency (185.9) and is 10th in passing touchdowns (23) and yards per pass attempt (9.95). The redshirt freshman is a semifinalist for both the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award the Maxwell Award and is a finalist for the Manning Award. He is also one of four freshmen this year named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) “Fresh Four” and was tabbed as the Manning “Star of the Week” for the third time.

The Red Wolves’ Adams Jr. has made his name known in the nation’s statistical rankings among wide receivers this season. The senior ranks third in receiving touchdowns (12), fifth in receiving yards (1,111), ninth in receptions per game (7.9), and tenth in receiving yards per game (111.1). The Jonesboro, Arkansas native currently ranks second All-Time at Arkansas State for receiving touchdowns (21), third for receptions (166), and fifth for receiving yards (2,306). His 21 career touchdown grabs are also tied for the fifth-most in Sun Belt Conference history. Plus, Adams is one of 11 semifinalists for this season’s Biletnikoff Award.

Jackson played in all 11 games this year for the Chanticleers and racked up 13.5 tackles for a loss and 8.5 sacks for 50 yards during the regular season. The redshirt senior registered 10 tackles (4 solo, 6 assisted), 2.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble against South Alabama back on November 7. His performance this year makes him one of the keys to the Coastal Carolina defense as one of four pass-rushers for Coastal this season that rank in the Sun Belt Top 10. Jackson is also a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award.

Strong, who transferred in this year, closed out his first year with Coastal tallying 26 tackles, 21 of them being solos, and is first on the team in passes defended with 11. His five interceptions this season rank him first with one returned for a pick-six against App State. The junior registered a team-high two interceptions twice this season against Georgia Southern (October 24) and App State (November 21).

JONESBORO – Arkansas State wide receiver Corey Rucker was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after breaking the NCAA FBS record for single-game receiving yards by a freshman during the Red Wolves’ 48-15 victory over ULM.

Making his first career start at A-State, the true freshman recorded a career-high nine receptions for a school-record 310 yards and four touchdowns to help the Red Wolves pile up 511 passing yards that were the third most in program history.

The previous FBS record for receiving yards by a freshman in a game was 283 yards, recorded by East Carolina’s C.J. Johnson against Cincinnati on Nov. 2, 2019. Rucker’s 310 yards were also the second most in Sun Belt Conference history and the most by an FBS player since 2016.

Rucker’s four touchdown catches tied the school record and matched the second most ever by a Sun Belt Conference player. Each of his four scoring receptions covered at least 30 yards and two went for at least 55.

The Yazoo City, Miss., native also had a career-long reception of 69 yards, and he averaged 34.4 yards per catch for the fifth-best average in Sun Belt history. Rucker was on the receiving end of three of A-State’s first five touchdowns to help the Red Wolves build a 35-7 lead early in the third quarter.

Including Rucker, A-State has now had five different players earn one of the Sun Belt Conference’s weekly awards six times. Wide receiver Jonathan Adams Jr. was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 14 and Oct. 19, while linebacker Justin Rice was the Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12. Kicker Blake Grupe and punter Ryan Hansen were tabbed a Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 7 and Oct. 12, respectively.

Rucker has also been named the College Sports Madness National Offensive Player of the Week, as well as a National Performer of the Week by College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). Following his performance Saturday, he received a “helmet sticker” on ESPN’s College Football Final show.

Arkansas State closes out the regular season Saturday, Dec. 12, with a home game against the University of the Incarnate Word at 2 p.m.

FOLEY, Ala. – Three players reached double figures in kills, <dfn>Laura Jansen</dfn> recorded another double-double and a streaking Little Rock Volleyball team won its fifth straight match to advance to the Sun Belt Championship Semifinal round in a 3-0 win over Georgia State Thursday afternoon.

<dfn>Janae Thurston</dfn> led the Trojans with 12 kills while <dfn>Laura Jansen’s</dfn> 11 kills and 15 digs netted her 11th double-double of the season. <dfn>Nedima Kamberovic</dfn> put down 10 kills while <dfn>Nicole Medlin</dfn> hit .400 with eight kills for the freshman. Medlin also added two solo blocks.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-18 and 25-18.

Little Rock (6-13) never trailed by two the entire match and never trailed over the last two sets. Georgia State (9-11), which has now lost nine of its last 10 against the Trojans, was led by the 10 kills but only .103 hitting percentage of Erin Wyatt while Leah Wilcox put down nine kills. No other Panther recorded more than four.

The win marks the fifth straight for Little Rock, the program’s longest winning streak since opening up the 2018 season with a 5-0 record. That year was also the last time Little Rock made an appearance in the Sun Belt Tournament Semifinals. This year’s trip will be the 15th semifinal appearance in program history. Little Rock will face the Pool A winner on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. CT.

FOLEY, Ala. – It’s Championship Week for the Trojans as Little Rock Volleyball heads to Foley, Alabama for the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament.

The 2020 championship event has a new “World Cup” style format with pool play leading to a single elimination bracket round that will determine the league’s tournament champion and who will receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, to be held in the spring.

The Trojans will face Louisiana (Wednesday) and Georgia State (Thursday) in pool play this week with the goal of advancing to the semifinal round of bracket play. All matches this week will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

Series History
Louisiana: Little Rock leads, 39-16, but the Ragin’ Cajuns have won five straight
Georgia State: Little Rock leads, 8-2, and the Trojans have won eight of the last nine

Three Things to Know

The Only Game in Town
Or even the nation. The Sun Belt Conference will be the only conference to host a conference volleyball championship this fall when 12 teams descend upon the Foley Sports Complex this week. That is a credit to a league that has focused on mask wearing, social distancing and following local and state health guidelines since competition began in September.

One You Know, One You Don’t
As Little Rock prepares to face Louisiana and Georgia State in pool play this week, one opponent will be familiar while the other won’t. The Trojans played a three-match series with the Ragin’ Cajuns this year and while the matches didn’t end in Little Rock’s favor, all three were incredibly close. Meanwhile, the Sun Belt’s division-only schedule did not allow the Trojans to face Georgia State this season.

Flair for the Dramatic
If you’re watching Little Rock Volleyball, you are guaranteed to be entertained. The Trojans have played an astounding 21 sets this year that have been determined by just two points. Moreover, Little Rock has played 13 sets this year that have required extra points in order to determine a victor.
