COLUMBIA, Mo.  – Having won 16 games in a row and looking for their first American Midwest Conference championship, Central Baptist College softball took on the host school Columbia College this afternoon. CBC (35-19) saw their winning streak end and their title hopes dashed as they fell to the Cougars (30-14) in a pair of contests 5-2 and 10-0.

Kymberlie House (SO/Jacksonville, Ark.) and Rachel Gregory (SO/North Little Rock, Ark.) were the starters in the circle for the two games. Kaylee St. John (JR/Conway, Ark.) homered in the first game.

GAME 1 – COLUMBIA 5, CBC 2

Both team’s starters kept the other off the board for the first three innings before the Mustangs struck first in the fourth. Rachael Jones (SO/Conway, Ark.) led off the inning with a single, moved the third on a ground out by St. John and then scored on Hunter Clark (SR/Sheridan, Ark.)’s fielder’s choice to give CBC a 1-0 lead. Columbia tied the game in the bottom half on a pair of singles and an error. St. John gave the lead back to the Mustangs with her ninth home run of the season in the sixth to make it 2-1, but the Cougars would not be down for long, scoring four times in the bottom half then keeping CBCoff the board in the seventh to secure the win. House was the unfortunate loser, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing five hits and five runs (one earned) with four Ks.

GAME 2 – COLUMBIA 10, CBC 0 (FIVE INNINGS)

Neither team scored in the first and the Cougars got to CBC starter Rachel Gregory in the second, scoring four off her and four off reliever Madison Skelton (SR/Prairie Grove, Ark.) to lead 8-0 after two. The Mustangs couldn’t get the offense going at all, mustering only three hits and dropping the game in a run rule to give the Cougars the AMC Championship. Gregory was the loser, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing four hits and four runs in the loss.

UP NEXT

The Mustangs will now have to wait and see where they will end up, either with an at-large bid to the NAIA Opening Round or the top-seed in the NCCAA Central Regional. A schedule announcement will be made early next week.
