NORMAN, Okla. – Following a season in which he set the men’s golf program record for single-season scoring average, Arkansas Tech’s Austin Gean has been named to the Division II PING All-America Third Team, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday.
Gean, a sophomore from Florence, Ala., joins a list of 24 Division II golfers to comprise the first, second and third teams, while 22 golfers were named honorable mentions. Gean is one of two Great American Conference golfers to earn All-America honors, as Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Zach James was a first-team selection.
Gean is just the fifth All-America honoree in Arkansas Tech men’s golf history and is the first since Nick Quast in 2005. Gean averaged 71.83 strokes per round in 2018, 28th-best in Division II and the lowest average in Arkansas Tech history. He finished in the top 10 in five of eight tournaments, leading the Wonder Boys to their second consecutive appearance in the Division II National Quarterfinals.
At the Division II Men’s Golf National Championships on March 21-23 in Muscle Shoals, Ala., Gean posted scores of 72, 71 and 67 to finish tied for seventh. Both his position and three-round score of 210 are the best at a national championship tournament in program history.
