Central Baptist wins NCCAA Central Regional, advances to national tournament

McPherson, Kan. –  The Central Baptist College gained a birth in the 2017 NCCAA Dl Men’s Basketball National Championship with a win Saturday afternoon over Southwestern Christian University, 78-72.  The Mustangs are an automatic qualifier after winning the Central Region Championship.

As with previous games CBC has played in this championship, the first half was played tight.  The Eagles started off with a three from Jamal Ray. CBC’s Andy Ettiene (JR/Jersery City, NJ) answered for the Mustangs.  The first half saw two ties and a SWCU lead of nine with 8:54 to play in the half. The Mustangs Mike Evans (SR/North Little Rock, AR) would give CBC the lead with four minutes left and the half would end with the Eagles leading the Mustangs 36-32.

The second half would see the Eagles lead early as Marvin White hit a three pointer.  CBC’s defense tightened up and Marcelious Green (JR/Houston, TX) scored off a turnover to give CBC the lead at 50-49.  Green then stole the ball and scored again on a fast break.    SWCU’s Jamal Ray tied the game at 68 with three minutes to play.  CBC’s Fred Albright (SR/Little Rock, AR) answered the call and CBC would be shooting free throws to ice the game.

Jayln McBride (SR/Jonesboro, AR) led the Mustangs with 16 points.  Green added 15 and Mike Evans had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Mon’Darrius Benson (JR/ Birmingham, AL) and Andy Ettiene each scored nine in the game.
