WINONA LAKE, IND. – The Central Baptist Mustangs’ title hopes were dashed Wednesday afternoon in a thrilling double-overtime game in the opening round of the NCCAA Men’s Division I National Championship. CBC was edged by the host Grace College, 80-86.
The Lancers and Mustangs ended the half tied at 33. With seven minutes left in the half CBC found itself down 15-24. The Mustangs got to work starting with a back to back baskets by Andy Ettiene (JR/Jersery City, NJ) and Teshawn Sims(SR/Conway, AR). Central Baptist went on a 10-2 run to take the lead 33-31 before Grace’s Erik Bowen hit two free throws to tie it up.
The Lancers opened up a 14-point lead in the second half on a three-pointer by Jaret Sons. That’s when the Mustangs got to work. Teshawn Sims scored followed by a DJ Reed (SR/England, AR) basket as CBC battled back to within 60-64. Fred Albright (SR/Little Rock, AR)’s three-pointer and a basket by Mike Evans (SR/North Little Rock, AR) gave CBC the lead 65-64. A Lancer free throw with seconds left tied it up in regulation at 65.
The teams battle in a first overtime and CBC evened it up at 72 on a Fred Albright free-throw. The second overtime was a back and forth affair. The Lancers held an 84-78 lead and then CBC’s Jalyn McBride scored to get within four points before free throws created the final score.
Teshawn Sims would lead the Mustangs with 16 points. Mike Evans added 13 points and 12 rebounds while Marcelious Green (JR/Houston, TX) scored 11 points.
UP NEXT: The Mustangs play Thursday at 9:15 a.m. in a consolation bracket game against the Hiwassee College (Tenn.) Tigers.
