Southside teams post big wins on Wednesday at Lyon tournament

Mountain View Girls also win over Calico Rock

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The second day of the Lyon College/Mark Martin Automotive High School Tournament took place on Wednesday inside James C. Becknell Gymnasium at Lyon College.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Pocahontas High School boys’ team defeated the Izard County Consolidated boys’ squad in a close 43-39 battle. The second game of the day featured the Mountain View girls’ team sprinting to a 48-25 victory over the Calico Rock girls’ squad. The third game pitted the Mountain View boys’ team against the Calico Rock boys’ team, where Mountain View held on for a 34-30 victory.

The final two games of the night featured the Southside High School boys’ and girls’ squads playing in their respective matchups. In the girls game, Southside defeated Izard County 57-41, while the Southside boys’ team defeated Highland 65-26.

The tournament continues Thursday with four games scheduled at Lyon College and three games scheduled at Southside High School. In girls’ action at Lyon, Cedar Ridge will face Calico Rock at 4 p.m., followed by Pocahontas at Salem at 5:15 p.m., and Highland vs. Cave City at 7:45 p.m. There will be one boys game played at Lyon on Thursday, which will be played between Cave City and Bald Knob at 6:30 p.m. Southside High School will host three boys’ games with Viola vs. Cedar Ridge at 4:30 p.m., followed by Salem playing Highland at 5:45 p.m., and Izard County against Calico Rock at 7 p.m.

There will also be games Friday and Saturday, with the championship tilts set for Saturday.

BOYS

POCAHONTAS 43, IZARD COUNTY 39

In a low scoring affair the first game of the day came down to the last couple of possessions. Izard County hit a three-pointer down the stretch to cut the deficit to as little as one point, but Pocahontas sank a few free throws in the end to hold off the Cougars, 43-39.

Clayton Hale led the Redskins with 12 points, while Austin Dalton had 10 points and Logan Baltz added seven points.

Izard County was led by an 18 point performance by Justus Cooper. Taylor Reynolds added 12 points and Tanner Brooks had five points.

Pocahontas advances to the semifinals on Friday, which will be played at Lyon College at 7:45 p.m. Izard County will play on Thursday against Calico Rock at Southside High School at 7 p.m.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 34, CALICO ROCK 30

Mountain View held off a late comeback by Calico Rock to seal a 34-30 win in the third game of the night at Lyon College. Calico Rock hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five, but the Yellow Jackets’ defense fended off the Lady Pirates in the end.

Evan Isbell led the Yellow Jackets with 12 points and Tanner Buchanan had 10 points. Ryan Wilcox added five points, while John Ross Anderson had four.

Calico Rock was led by four players in Cole Whiteaker, Logan Dickerson, Brenden Sneathern and Cade Whiteaker who all pitched in five points apiece.

Mountain View advances to the semifinals and will play on Friday at Lyon College at 5:15 p.m. Calico Rock will meet Izard County on Thursday at Southside High School at 7 p.m.

SOUTHSIDE 65, HIGHLAND 26

Southside High School sprinted out to a decisive 65-26 victory over Highland High School Wednesday night in the final game of the day. The Southerners held a 35-15 halftime lead before scoring another 30 points in the second half on their way to victory.

Will Sitkowski led the Southerners with 17 points, while Trystan Alcorn had 11 points. Koby Rich pitched in eight points to round out the trio.

Highland was led by Tristan Hudson’s eight points in the game. Cullen Lewis was second on the team with six points.

Southside advances to the semifinals on Friday at Lyon College where they will play Mountain View at 5:15 p.m. Highland will face off against Salem on Thursday at Southside High School at 5:45 p.m.

GIRLS

MOUNTAIN VIEW 48, CALICO ROCK 25

Mountain View High School ran away with a 48-25 victory over Calico Rock High School in the second game of the day at Lyon College. The Lady Yellow Jackets controlled the tempo throughout the entire contest to hold off the Lady Pirates.

Kaley Shipman led Mountain View with 17 points, while Macey Decker pitched in eight points. Keleanna Johnson and Cheyenne Shelton each had six points.

Megan Hiles and Josie McGowan each led Calico Rock with seven points apiece. Falon Shrake added four points and Kallie Fry chipped in three points.

Mountain View advances to the semifinal round and will play Southside Friday at Lyon College at 4 p.m. Calico Rock will play Thursday at Southside High School against Cedar Ridge at 4 p.m.

SOUTHSIDE 57, IZARD COUNTY 41 

The Southside girls’ team came away with a 57-41 victory over Izard County Wednesday night. The Lady Southerners led by a small margin at halftime, but extended their lead in the second half to defeat the Lady Cougars.

Reese Gardner led the Southerners with 25 points, while Kessie Jenkins had 16 points. Caylee McGuire chipped in five points.

The Lady Cougars were led by Kennedy Cooper’s 12 points. Sam King and Jen King each finished second on the team with 11 points apiece.

Southside advances to the semifinals on Friday at Lyon College where they will take on Mountain View at 4 p.m. Izard County will play at Southside High School on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
