Matthew Jagodzinski, Assistant Athletic Director for Media and Communications

HANNIBAL, Mo. – After a premature ending to the 2019-20 season and a delayed start to the 2020-21 campaign, the 23rd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team finally returned to action on Thursday night. Senior Jade Giron scored a career-high 33 points to help the Scots (1-0, 1-0 AMC) earn a 68-52 win at Hannibal-LaGrange (1-6, 0-1 AMC).

Giron’s 33 points were four shy of tying K.K. Hodges’ single-game record of 37, which she scored for the Scots on Feb. 9, 2008.

Giron found her groove right from the opening tip as she scored five of the Scots’ first seven points of the game. Later in the quarter, Giron connected on a three-pointer that gave Lyon a 15-5 lead with 3:21 left in the period. HLGU managed to cut the deficit to single-digits as a jumper by Emma Anderson put the score at 17-11 in favor of Lyon after the first quarter.

A three-pointer by Mari-Hanna Newsom opened up a 9-0 run for the Scots midway through the second quarter as Giron connected on three straight buckets during the stretch. The Scots held onto a double-digit lead the rest of the quarter and led 36-26 at the half.

HLGU pulled back within six points at the 5:09 mark of the third quarter but a pair of free throws by Blysse Harmon and another three by Newsom pushed the Scots lead back to double-digits.

The Scots’ lead grew to as many as 19 during the fourth quarter as a jumper by Haley Wesley gave Lyon a 59-40 advantage. The Lady Trojans attempted one final comeback and pulled back within nine with 1:25 remaining, but Giron put the game out of reach as she scored the final seven points of the contest.

Freshmen Newsom and Paige Kelley also finished in double figures scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Scots will now travel to St. Louis to take on Missouri Baptist in another AMC contest on Saturday at 1 p.m. Fans will not be allowed at Saturday’s game at MBU.

Erik Holth, Sports Information Director

QUINCY, Ill. – After sweeping a doubleheader yesterday, Central Baptist College took the field at Notre Dame High School today trying to finish off an American Midwest Conference series sweep of the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange. CBC (19-18, 12-9 AMC) finished the sweep, jumping on Hannibal (12-21, 5-18 AMC) early and winning 5-3.

Mark Rucker (JR/Hot Springs, Ark.) got the start in game three and pitched well. Baker Wilson (SR/Harrison, Ark.) hit the lone home run of the game after a Mustang barrage of eight in a doubleheader yesterday.

CBC opened the scoring in the second inning. Kelvin Volquez (JR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a single by Jay French (SO/Magnolia, Ark.). Three batters later, Ryan Guyton(SR/Cordova, TN) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Jamal Washington (SR/Blytheville, Ark.) followed with a two-run single to give CBC a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs extended the lead to 4-0 in the third when Harber led off the inning with a single and was brought home on Wilson’s two-run home run, his second of the series and seventh of the season.

The Trojans responded with a single run in the fourth to cut it to four one and then added two in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3 which closed the book on Rucker. Caleb Muns (FR/Benton, Ark.) relieved Rucker in the seventh and walked a man with two outs but kept the Trojans off the board. The Mustangs scored their final run of the contest in the eighth on a single by Volquez to make it 5-3. Gavin Johnson (JR/Little Rock, Ark.) relieved Muns in the eighth and gave up a pair of hits and nothing else and Austin Cree (SR/Texarkana, Texas) picked up the save in the ninth, setting down the Trojans in order.

Rucker went 6 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs with four strikeouts to earn the win. Muns, Johnson and Cree combined to go three innings and allowed just two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Mustangs stay on the road for their next game on Tuesday afternoon when they step out of AMC play to face the Bobcats of College of the Ozarks. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and you can follow the action on Instagram and Twitter @gocbcmustangs and by liking Central Baptist College Athletics on Facebook.

Erik Holth, Sports Information Director

HANNIBAL, Mo. – Looking to keep momentum going from Tuesday night’s dominating win over Crowley’s Ridge, Central Baptist College opened American Midwest Conference play tonight with a trip to Hannibal-LaGrange. CBC (3-0, 1-0) barely missed tying a school record by making 31 free throws and leading all the way in an 88-78 win over HLGU (0-4, 0-1 AMC), their sixth win in seven meetings with the Trojans.

The Mustangs’ 31 made free throws is the second most all time, just one off the school record of 32, which has been done three times, the last occurrence coming in Feb. of 2017, against HLGU. Victor Dukes (SR/Jonesboro, Ark.) posted his 11th career double-double for CBC, leading the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, including a career-best 8-8 at the free throw line. Percell Washington(SR/Chicago, Ill.) barely missed his second double-double of the season, finishing with 20 and nine, while Tyrone Alston (JR/Caruthersville, Mo.) had 11 points and Ruston Hayward (SR/Houston, Texas) had 10 in his season debut. CBC shot 79 percent at the free throw line while also shooting 47 percent from the floor, holding Hannibal to 41 percent shooting and outrebounding the Trojans 40-31.

Washington opened the scoring 44 seconds into the game with a layup to make it 2-0 and Jalin Adams’ less than a minute after that gave CBC a 5-0 lead. From there, it was all Mustangs, as they led 38-32 at the half. Hannibal-LaGrange opened the second half on a 5-2 run the first 1:46 of the second half to cut the lead to two, but that’s as close as they would get as CBC would then go on a 12-2 run over the next 2:15 to put the game out of reach, with Washington, Dukes and Hayward providing all the offense during the run. The game never got closer than six after that and the Mustangs cruised to the final margin of 88-78.

Next up for CBC is their biggest test of the season so far, when they travel to Plainview, Texas to take on the number 20 team in the NAIA, the Pioneers of Wayland Baptist, who made the Elite Eight in the National Tournament last year. Tip for the game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Tyler Scott, Associate Sports Information Director

HANNIBAL, Mo. – After a win in the first game, the 25th-ranked Lyon College softball team scored seven unanswered runs in the second contest to complete the sweep over Hannibal-LaGrange University, Saturday afternoon. The Scots defeated the Trojans 5-4 and 7-2 behind 14 total hits.

Lyon is now 21-5 overall and 6-2 in the AMC, while Hannibal-LaGrange falls to 1-15 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Game One: Lyon 5, Hannibal-LaGrange 4

Leading 5-3 in the seventh inning, the Scots held on for the one-run victory in the first game at HLGU Softball field. The Scots jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Rachel Norman led off the inning with a triple, before Nicole Sanders would score her on a double, after Cheyenne Black walked. Addison Harmon then hit a two-RBI double to left field – scoring Black and Sanders. The Trojans would score their lone run in the inning on a Scots’ error.

After HLG scored one run in the third, the Scots posted two runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. With two outs, Black hit a two run home run to left field giving her nine total on the season. The Trojans would add a run in the fifth, before posing a threat in the seventh. The Scots however, were able to hold on as Sanders struck out Shelby Miller to end the game.

Sanders earned the victory – throwing a complete game and allowing three earned runs, while striking out four. Norman went 2-for-3, while Black and Harmon each added one hit and two RBIs.

Game Two: Lyon 7, Hannibal-LaGrange 2

The Scots faced a 2-0 deficit all the way into the fifth inning, before scoring seven unanswered runs to win the game. The Trojans’ Jordyn Alford hit a two-run home run to give HLG the 2-0 lead. Lyon’s offense finally came alive in the fifth as Sanders scored Black on a sacrifice fly ball.

The Scots would then take a 4-2 lead after six innings after Perkins started the scoring with a two-out double – scoring Riley Shaw and Cheyenne Herrera. Norman would later score Perkins on a single to give Lyon the advantage. Another three-run frame in the seventh inning added insurance for the Scots, on their way to victory. Shaw knocked in Harmon on a sacrifice fly ball, before Herrera scored on a double from Allie Lewis. Lewis would then score on a single from Norman.

Katelyn Platt picked up the win in the circle – throwing a complete game, while allowing just two earned runs and striking out five. Norman posted a team high two hits, while her and Perkins each added two RBIs.

UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots return to House Field for the first two contests of a four game home stand. Lyon will take on Mount Mercy University on Tuesday in a doubleheader, beginning at 12 p.m.
