COLUMBIA, Mo. – In what was a highly anticipated matchup between the 22^nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team and (RV) Columbia College, the game lived up to the hype, as the Scots knocked off the Cougars, 64-58, on the road on Tuesday night.

Lyon moved into sole possession of first place in the American Midwest Conference standings as the Scots improved to 5-0 (5-0 AMC), while CC fell to 7-3 (5-1 AMC).

It was a game of runs between the Scots and Cougars as Columbia erased a 4-3 deficit and went on a 10-0 run to take a 13-4 lead midway through the first period. It was the Scots turn for their run after that as Lyon ended the quarter on a 13-0 run and took led, 17-13, after the first period.

A three-pointer by Jade Giron opened up the scoring in the second quarter as Lyon continued their run and extended their lead to 27-13 with 5:20 remaining. A jumper by Columbia’s Mallory Shetley at the 3:28 mark ended a 12-minute scoring drought for the Cougars. The Scots continued to hold a double-digit lead until a three-pointer by the Cougars cut the deficit to seven before a jumper by Paige Tate gave Lyon a 33-24 lead at the half.

Columbia opened up the third quarter on a 7-0 run and pulled within two, 33-31, just under four minutes in. The Scots continued to hold off the Cougars until Columbia knotted the score at 40-40 on a pair of free throws. A layup by Giron gave the Scots a two-point lead momentarily, but CC ended the quarter on a 7-0 run and took a 47-42 lead into the fourth period.

CC extended its lead to 49-42 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter but Lyon rallied back and took a 50-49 lead on a bucket by Giron. It was a seesaw battle between the Scots and Cougars over the next three minutes until a layup by Katie Turner gave Lyon a 57-56 lead with 2:32 left to play. The Scots would not surrender their lead the rest of the way as a free throw by Marleigh Dodson with 12 seconds left gave Lyon a six-point victory.

Giron scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead all scorers. Kelley recorded the first double-double of her career as she finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Scots will return home and host the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

BATESVILLE – The 11^th-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team capped off its 2019-20 regular season in stunning fashion as the Scots defeated No. 15 Columbia College, 77-60, on Saturday afternoon inside Becknell Gymnasium. Following the game, the Scots honored their two seniors – Liz Henderson and Madison Riley – as part of the Senior Day recognition.

The Scots finished the regular season at 27-3 (23-1 American Midwest Conference). The 27 wins tied the 2012-13 team for the most wins in the regular season, while the 23 conference victories are the most in a season in program history.

The Scots and Cougars kept the score close all throughout the first quarter until a bucket by Madison Riley gave the Scots a 9-8 lead with 1:58 remaining. From there, The Scots began to take over as Marleigh Dodson split a pair of free throws before Riley and Liz Henderson added a bucket each to extend the lead to 14-8. CC ended the run with a basket in the paint by Ukari McKinney before Haley Wesley gave the Scots a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.

It was all Lyon in the second quarter as the Scots outscored the Cougars, 27-14, in the period. A pair of free throws by Katie Turner with 30 seconds remaining gave the Scots their largest lead of the half at 43-24.

Kristen Baham knocked down a triple to open up the third quarter and pushed the Scots lead to 46-24 before CC cut the deficit in half over the next six minutes. The Scots ended the period with a three-pointer by Alexis Moore and a layup by Henderson and took a 56-40 advantage into the final quarter.

CC cut the deficit to 11 twice in the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as the Cougars would get as the Scots ended the game on a 6-0 run and earned a 77-60 win.

Riley recorded a double-double and just missed out on a triple-double as she finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to go along with eight assists. Henderson chipped in 14 points, while Turner and Jade Giron finished with 10 points each.

The Scots will open the AMC Championship as the No. 1-seed and will host No. 8-seed Central Baptist College on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Columbia, Mo. – The CBC Mustangs went back and forth in the first half against NAIA #3 Columbia College but could not contain the Cougars as they fall 86-68.

CBC’s Nick Jones had a season high 16 points, Marcelious Green added ten in the effort. Mike Evans had eight points and led with six rebounds. MonDarius Benson added nine points with Jayln McBride putting in eight.

The first half saw both teams working to keep it close as there were two ties early. Travis Vogt (CC) made it 28-16, the Cougars largest lead with 8:06 left in the half. With 5:37 left Mustangs’ Jones scored off a Cougars turnover to give Central Baptist the lead 29-28. This would be the closest CBC would come in the half and the game.

CBC was held to 35.5% from the field while Columbia hit 51.9%. The loss gives Central Baptist a 11-6, 6-5 AMC record. Columbia is 19-1, 12-0 AMC.
