JBU Sports
Nick Robinson, Director of Sports Information

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Plagued by a season-high 30 turnovers, the John Brown University women’s basketball team battled through the difficult Warrior press and finished the contest on a late rally to take a 67-64 come-from-behind victory on Tuesday night (Feb. 13) inside the Palmer Gymnasium.

For the second consecutive season, junior <dfn>Baily Cameron</dfn> went off for a game-high 30 points, hitting 13-of-17 from the floor, no three shots more important than with the game on the line, as the Golden Eagle leading scorer hit three-straight shots in the paint in the final two minutes.

Cameron pulled John Brown (16-9, 9-6 Sooner Athletic) within one with a post move off a feed from sophomore <dfn>Sara Williams</dfn> with 1:51 left in the contest, before taking matters into her own hands on the next possession by hitting a spinning left-handed layup to put the visitors on top, 65-64. With the pressure mounting, Bacone coughed up the ensuing possession at the free throw line and senior <dfn>Kimmy Deines</dfn> grabbed the steal, raced down the court and fed an open Cameron on the right post with a bounce-pass to complete the game-clinching 8-0 rally.

» After trailing for the majority of the contest, the Golden Eagles finished the final 2:44 of the game on an 8-0 run.
» For the second season in a row, junior <dfn>Baily Cameron</dfn> finished with a game-high 30 points inside Palmer Gymnasium.
» John Brown hit over 50 percent of its shots (24-of-45), but its season-high 30 turnovers allowed the Warriors to take 29 more shot attempts.
» Averaging 41 rebounds per contest, the Bacone rebounders were limited to just 30 as JBU won the battle on the boards, 36-30.

After taking a 64-59 lead with 3:58 remaining, the Bacone (13-12, 5-11) offense stalled and finished the contest 0-of-10 from the field while committing a pair of turnovers, allowing JBU to capture its third win in four games.

A full-court press for most of the contest forced the Golden Eagles into a season-high 30 turnovers, but the visitors shot 53.3 percent from the field (24-of-45) and connected on 10-of-24 triple attempts, including a 7-of-8 long-range eruption in the third quarter, converted a 38-34 halftime deficit into a 55-55 tie heading into the final quarter.

Marred all night long by erratic shooting, the Warriors hit just 4-of-17 in the final stanza (23.5 percent) and allowed the Golden Eagles to take a 13-7 rebounding advantage, which JBU needed as the visitors, when presented with chances to ice the game late, converted just 2-of-8 free throws in the last 10 minutes of play.

The Warriors, a top-three rebounding team in the conference, entered the game averaging over 41 boards a game, were limited to just 30 as JBU earned a 36-30 advantage on the boards.

Bacone hit just 27-of-74 from the field (36.5 percent) and 7-of-23 from long range (30.4 percent). Cierra Miles registered 17 points and four assists while Imani Guillory added 10 points in the loss. Jakierra Drummer chipped in with nine points and a team-best 10 boards.

Cameron finished the contest with 11 boards, marking her fifth double-double of the season, and a pair of blocks. Senior <dfn>Kimmy Deines</dfn> came up with a big 10 points and a game-best six dimes while Schammel and senior <dfn>Rosa Orpo</dfn> each contributed nine points in the win.

JBU continues on in its three-game week by hosting Southwestern A.G. (Texas) on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles are now just a half game behind Mid-America Christian (Okla.) for fourth place, and the final spot for hosting duties in the Sooner Athletic tournament quarterfinals on Feb. 27.

BILLINGS, MONT. – Baily Cameron’s three-pointer with 52 seconds left put her team up by five and gave the Lady Eagles just enough room to hold off the Ravens.

Cameron made free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win and No. 4 seed John Brown got past No. 5 seed Benedictine, 74-72, in the opening round of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship.

The Ravens got three-pointers from Ali Taff and Kristen Murphy in the final minute, but ran out of time at the end.

JBU (23-8) held a two-point advantage at halftime, a lead that would hold as the teams each scored 25 points in the third quarter and each scored 19 in the fourth. The 4-5 matchup couldn’t have been more even.

JBU’s Cameron had a game-high 27 points and shot 9-of-16 from the field.

Kodee Powell had 17 points and four assists for the Lady Eagles.

Benedictine (25-9) was led by Haylee Beard, who had 18 points and five rebounds. BC’s Murphy put in 17 points, dished out five assists and grabbed four boards in the loss.

John Brown will next face the No. 8 seed in the Liston Bracket, Williams Woods (Mo.), on Friday at 9 p.m. CDT.

From JBU Sports
Nicholas Robinson, Director of Sports Information

SILOAM SPRINGS – Sophomore Baily Cameron posted a double-double and the John Brown University women’s basketball team lead for most of the contest, but a fourth-quarter comeback led by sophomore Preslea Reece guided the Golden Eagles to a 70-66 win over No. 11 Benedictine (Kan.) on Tuesday (Nov. 1) evening inside Bill George Arena.

Facing a one-point deficit, 59-58, with 3:23 left in the game, Reece hit back-to-back triples and finished off a personal eight-point run with a shot in the post to cap a 10-2 run, handing JBU (1-0) a 66-61 lead with one minute left.

The Golden Eagles held Bendictine to 2-of-6 from the field in the final 60 seconds and senior Kodee Powell went 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the season-opening upset victory.

“I thought we played well at times, a typical first game,” admitted head coach Jeff Soderquist. “We started off the second quarter hot, but then (Benedictine) changed up their defense. We got passive and stood around. In the second half, Kimmy (Deines) and others started to attack, getting it inside.

“I was very proud of how we handled giving up the lead and sticking with it. You know everyone is going to be after Baily (Cameron), and I thought Preslea (Reece) stepped up and hit those big threes and that soft corner shot and really stepped up for us tonight.”

Cameron nabbed a double-double with 22 points and 10 boards while Reece finished with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. Powell hit 4-of-5 from behind the arc to add 17 points as the hosts shot 22-of-55 from the field (40 percent), but more impressively hit 45 percent of shots taken from long range (11-of-24).

The Ravens, which finished the 2015-16 season in the national semifinals, was led by Kristen Murphy’s 18 points while LaRanda Smith hit four triples to contribute 14 points. Ali Taff produced 11 points in the loss and dished out a game-high eight assists.

While both teams committed over 15 turnovers, John Brown made the Ravens pay to the tune of 21 points. The majority of the match was played close, featuring four ties and five lead changes.

JBU will now enjoy a six-day break until returning to action on Monday (Nov. 7) when the Golden Eagles host Ecclesia (Ark.) at 8 p.m.
