BATESVILLE – Every player who played for the 18^th-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team scored as the Scots cruised to a 74-29 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange on Thursday night in Becknell Gymnasium. The Scots improved to 9-1 overall and in the American Midwest Conference, while HLGU fell to 1-15 (0-10 AMC).

The Scots took a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and put the game away in the second period, outscoring the Trojans, 26-5, over the next 10 minutes.

Lyon shot 53.6% for the game, going 30-of-56 from the field as a team and limited HLGU to just 29.2% shooting (14-of-48).

Jade Giron led all scorers with a game-high 22 points, while Paige Kelley and Klaudija Bacovic finished in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Bacovic recorded her first-career double-double in the win with 10 rebounds to go along with her 12 points.

The Scots will continue their home stand on Saturday when they host Missouri Baptist in another AMC matchup at 1 p.m.

ST. LOUIS– No. 22 Lyon College women’s basketball freshman forward Paige Kelley was named as the American Midwest Conference Player of the Week after helping the Scots to a pair of conference wins last week. This is her first-career AMC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award.

The Scots defeated Stephens College, 77-35, last Thursday, before earning a 56-47 comeback victory against William Woods on Saturday. It was the Paige Kelley show for the Scots in their two games last week after the freshman posted a pair of career-highs. Kelley got her monster week started with a career-high 25 points in the win against Stephens. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists, while shooting 10-of-16 from the floor.

Kelley followed that up with a new career-high of 28 points in the win against the Owls. She also finished with eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals, while going 13-of-15 from the floor. For the week, Kelley averaged 26.5 points per game and 7.0 rebound per game, while shooting over 74% from the floor.

For the season, Kelley is averaging a team-high 19.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. She ranks second in the NAIA in field goal percentage (72.7%) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (6.0).

The Scots will return to action on Tuesday night at (RV) Columbia College. Tip-off for Tuesday’s game is set for 5:30 p.m.

BATESVILLE – For the second time in as many contests, freshman Paige Kelley scored at least 25 points in a game. After dropping a career-high 25 points on Thursday night, she surpassed that total with a new career-high of 28 points on Saturday as the 22^nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team earned a 56-47 win against William Woods.

The Scots moved to 4-0 (4-0 American Midwest Conference) with the win, while WWU fell to 1-4 (1-4 AMC).

The first two quarters were tightly contested between the Scots and Owls as Lyon took a 16-14 lead after the first quarter before trailing at the half, 30-26.

In the third quarter, WWU extended its lead to 40-32 before a three-pointer by Blysse Harmon sparked a big rally from the Scots. Kelley scored the next two buckets for the Scots before a layup in transition by Mari-Hanna Newsom pulled Lyon within one, 42-41, at the end of the third quarter.

The Scots continued to find success on the offensive end of the court and opened up the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run after a pair of free throws by Kelley gave the Scots a 50-42 lead with 6:32 left to play. After a score by the Owls, The Scots responded with back-to-back buckets by Kelley and Turner to push their lead to 54-44. WWU cut the Scots’ lead to seven with a three but a layup by Klaudija Bacovic proved to be the final score of the game.

The Scots will return to action on Tuesday night for a highly-anticipated matchup at (RV) Columbia College at 5:30 p.m.

BATESVILLE – Behind a career-high 25 points from Paige Kelley, the 22^nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team opened up the home portion of its schedule on Thursday night with a 77-35 demolition of Stephens College in American Midwest Conference play.

The Scots improved to 3-0 (3-0 AMC), while the Stars fell to 0-3 (0-3 AMC).

Lyon got off to a fast start and took a 13-3 lead midway through the first quarter after a three-pointer by Mari-Hanna Newsom. The last time that Stephens was even within single digits came at the 2:14 mark of the first quarter after Maddy Denslow split a pair of free throws. The Scots went on to close the quarter on an 8-0 run and led 21-4.

The Scots took their largest lead of the first half with 1:16 left to go in the second quarter after a bucket by Jade Giron gave Lyon a 39-12 advantage. After a pair of free throws by the Stars, Blysse Harmon scored on a jumper that put the lead back up to 27 before a three-pointer by Stephens put the score at 41-17 in favor of the Scots at the half.

Much like the first quarter, the Scots commanded the third quarter and outscored the Stars, 16-7, in the period. Lyon pushed its lead to as many as 45 late in the fourth quarter and ended with a 77-35 victory.

Harmon and Giron added 13 points each, while Newsom finished with 12 points.

The Scots will close out their brief home stand on Saturday when they welcome William Woods to Becknell Gymnasium for another AMC contest at 1 p.m.

ST. LOUIS – The 23^rd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team held a four-point lead against Missouri Baptist entering the final quarter of play in an American Midwest Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Scots outscored the Spartans, 27-18, in the final quarter and earned an 82-69 victory.

The Scots took an early 6-1 lead over the Spartans after back-to-back three-pointers by Jade Giron and Mari-Hanna Newsom. Lyon continued to hold a lead over MBU until a three-pointer by the Spartans’ Kim Shaw put Missouri Baptist up 10-8 with 3:58 left in the quarter. The Scots responded with a 7-0 run to go back up by five and later extended their lead to 20-13 following a pair of free throws by Giron. MBU answered back with another three but Giron split a pair of free throws before time expired to give Lyon a 21-16 advantage after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Lyon extended its lead to 29-19 following a three-pointer each by Giron and Haley Wesley and a layup by Paige Kelley. Missouri Baptist began to take over from there, however, as the Spartans went on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes and took a 34-31 lead. The Missouri Baptist lead did not last long, however, as Newsom knocked down a pair of threes around a jumper by Giron and gave Lyon a 39-34 lead at the half.

Lyon pushed its lead to 47-35 three minutes into the third quarter after another three by Giron before MBU closed to gap to two points, 53-51, in the final minute of the period. Newsom converted on a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the quarter to give the Scots a 55-51 advantage.

Missouri Baptist took a 56-55 lead over Lyon just two minutes into the fourth quarter on a bucket in transition by Kim Shaw but Newsom responded with a three during the Scots’ next possession. Lyon took control of the rest of the quarter and pulled away for a 13-point victory.

Following a 33-point effort in the season opener on Thursday, Giron once again led the Scots offensively with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds. Newsom had 21 points in just her second collegiate game, while Paige Kelley and Blysse Harmon finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Scots will return home for their next game and host Stephens College in another AMC matchup on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m.

HANNIBAL, Mo. – After a premature ending to the 2019-20 season and a delayed start to the 2020-21 campaign, the 23^rd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team finally returned to action on Thursday night. Senior Jade Giron scored a career-high 33 points to help the Scots (1-0, 1-0 AMC) earn a 68-52 win at Hannibal-LaGrange (1-6, 0-1 AMC).

Giron’s 33 points were four shy of tying K.K. Hodges’ single-game record of 37, which she scored for the Scots on Feb. 9, 2008.

Giron found her groove right from the opening tip as she scored five of the Scots’ first seven points of the game. Later in the quarter, Giron connected on a three-pointer that gave Lyon a 15-5 lead with 3:21 left in the period. HLGU managed to cut the deficit to single-digits as a jumper by Emma Anderson put the score at 17-11 in favor of Lyon after the first quarter.

A three-pointer by Mari-Hanna Newsom opened up a 9-0 run for the Scots midway through the second quarter as Giron connected on three straight buckets during the stretch. The Scots held onto a double-digit lead the rest of the quarter and led 36-26 at the half.

HLGU pulled back within six points at the 5:09 mark of the third quarter but a pair of free throws by Blysse Harmon and another three by Newsom pushed the Scots lead back to double-digits.

The Scots’ lead grew to as many as 19 during the fourth quarter as a jumper by Haley Wesley gave Lyon a 59-40 advantage. The Lady Trojans attempted one final comeback and pulled back within nine with 1:25 remaining, but Giron put the game out of reach as she scored the final seven points of the contest.

Freshmen Newsom and Paige Kelley also finished in double figures scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Scots will now travel to St. Louis to take on Missouri Baptist in another AMC contest on Saturday at 1 p.m. Fans will not be allowed at Saturday’s game at MBU.
