HENDERSON, Tenn. – A top-15 battle lived up to its billing with the No. 7 Freed-Hardeman University Lions hosting the No. 11 Central Baptist (Ark.) College Mustangs. Regulation was not enough. One overtime was not enough. It took two overtime periods to determine the victor with FHU battling to the 91-89 win.

A defensive battle from the tipoff, the Lions (5-1) got on the board first at 17:47 with a jumper from Peyton Law. Central Baptist would answer with a 3-pointer before Phil Horton’s jumper ignited a seven-point run capped by Blake Dean’s triple. The Mustangs answered to tie the game with a layup at 9:32, but FHU took a lead and then some, scoring 12 unanswered points with Jordan Stephens’ long ball putting the Lions on top 26-14 with 5:13 remaining in the first act. Late free throws and late 3-pointers from CBC narrowed the gap when time expired on round one with FHU leading 37-30 at the break.

The Mustangs (5-1) came out of the locker room with the same momentum they entered, scoring the first seven points of the second half including a free throw tying the game at 17:12. From there, neither team would lead by more than two possessions with Phil Horton pushing the Lions ahead by scoring eight points in just over one minute. A 3-pointer from Stephens tied the game with 1:56 remaining in regulation before the Mustangs were able to take a three-point lead into the final 60 seconds. Horton again had the big bucket, draining a 3-pointer with five seconds to go before blocking the last shot attempt to end regulation in a 76-76 tie.

CBC opened the first overtime by taking a four-point lead; however, Geralo Lane joined Horton at the charity stripe to go 4-4 with Horton’s with 30 seconds tying the game 82-82. Vying for the last shot, the Mustangs attempted a 3-pointer with three seconds left, but Lane secured the rebound to force a second overtime.

The Lions drew first blood in the second overtime with a jumper from Law, but the Mustangs answered with a 3-pointer. Stephens connected for a jumper to give FHU a lead they would maintain until the end. A 3-pointer narrowed the gap to one point, but Lane again hit his free throws with two seconds to go to claim the victory 91-89.

FHU out-rebounded CBC 51-36 and dominated from the bench with FHU scoring 44 points to CBC’s 18 bench points. The Mustangs were led by Sage Borbon’s 43 points including 10 3-pointers.

Peyton Law and Geraldo Lane both tallied double-doubles with Law sinking 20 points with a team-high 12 rebounds while Lane scored 18 points with 10 rebounds. Phil Horton was a rebound short of a double-double with 20 points and nine boards. Jordan Stephens tallied 19 points and a team-high four assists in the win.

CBC Athletics
Erik Holth

CONWAY – Central Baptist College Athletic Director Lyle Middleton has announced the hiring of Sam Kohnke as the head men’s basketball coach. Kohnke becomes the sixth head coach of the NAIA era for the Mustangs.

“This is an opportunity that I’m super excited for and couldn’t pass up,” said Kohnke. “This is an incredible honor. Coaching is something I’ve wanted to do since I was in seventh or eighth grade. To get this opportunity at a place like CBC in a community like CBC is amazing. I’m not taking this for granted and I’m looking forward to getting started!”

Kohnke returns to CBC after serving as a Graduate Assistant coach at the University of North Texas since June. He served as an assistant coach on last season’s Mustang team that went 19-7 overall, won the American Midwest Conference tournament championship (by a record 35 points), and played in the NAIA National Tournament for the third time. He helped coach a pair of NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans (Tedrick Wolfe and Kelvin Robinson) and four players total (Wolfe, Robinson, Zach Hudson and Brevin Brimble (SR/Colorado Springs, Colo.)) that were All-AMC honorees.

“I’m excited to have Sam as part of the Mustang family,” said Middleton. “Sam is a dedicated coach, strong recruiter, and mentor who will lead these young men to new heights. This program has been on top of the AMC for the last four years and I believe Sam will continue the climb for excellence!”

Kohnke has prior head coaching experience at his alma mater, Millsaps College, where he served as the interim head coach during the summer of 2020. Prior to his stint as the interim head coach, he served as the associate head coach at Millsaps, helping the Majors win 17 games and record their first winning season in 12 years. He also coached five All-Southern Athletic Association selections including the Defensive Player of the Year. During the 2018-19 season, Kohnke coached eight All-SAA Academic team selections and organized a team trip to Costa Rica.

Prior to arriving at Millsaps, Kohnke, a New Orleans native, worked as a volunteer assistant coach at Tulane under former NBA head coach Mike Dunleavy. He earned his Bachelor of Art Degree in Philosophy from Millsaps in 2018 and played basketball at both Millsaps and Loyola New Orleans.

“Coach Kohnke made a great impact on our program,” said Grant McCasland, University of North Texas head coach. “He understands that winning basketball games in an everyday approach of working hard to help others be the best they can be. He’s got experience as a player and a coach but is humble and always trying to improve. He cares about doing it right and won’t take shortcuts. We’re excited he has this opportunity and are grateful for his time with us.”

CONWAY – The 2021 spring sports season came to end this past Thursday with Ally Swaim (JR/Vilonia, Ark.)’s 100-meter hurdles run in the prelims at the NAIA National Track & Field Championship. Spring Sports did not see a single COVID-related cancelation on their schedule through the season, but there was an effect of snow as a storm put the season on ice for a week in February.

Baseball finished the season 24-20 with an appearance in the American Midwest Conference tournament, which ended in a disappointing 11-7 loss to Hannibal-LaGrange in the first round. CBC did have six players selected for all-conference honors, headlined by Andrew Killough (FR/Vilonia, Ark.) and Ruben Hernandez (FR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), who were selected as the AMC’s freshman pitcher and freshman player of the year. 15 players were also selected to the AMC All-Academic Team for their performances in the classroom.

Softball went 34-15 on the season and earned their second trip to the NAIA Opening Round. The Mustangs would reach the championship game in Hattiesburg, Miss., but saw their season end in heartbreak in a 2-1 walk-off loss to Houston-Victoria. The softball Mustangs earned seven all-conference selections, headlined by AMC Co-Player of the Year Allison Seats (SR/Jacksonville, Ark.) and AMC Freshman of the Year Hannah Work (FR/Bryant, Ark.). 13 players were also selected to the All-Academic Teams in the AMC for their outstanding work off the field.

Men’s Golf finished fourth in the American Midwest Conference Championship this season, posting a win in the fall at Freed-Hardeman. Three golfers, Colton Ryan (SR/Benton, La.), Spencer LaBarbera (SR/Mesquite, Texas) and Anupon Wandee (JR/Bangkok, Thailand) were all named AMC all-conference team members after Ryan finished second, LaBarbera finished eighth and Wandee finished 12th at the championships. Ryan and Emmanuel LaBeur (FR/Villeneuve, Les Avignon, France) were also selected to the AMC All-Academic Team.

Women’s Golf was led by Keeley Bulza this Spring, who posted a top-five finish at the CBC Mustangs Invitational in March. She also earned AMC All-Academic Team honors this season.

Track & Field had two AMC champions this spring, with Swaim capturing her second title in the 100-meter hurdles and Jamal Washington winning the second straight 100-meter title for CBC. Swaim went 7-1 in the 100-meter hurdles this season and posted the 16th fastest time in the nation at 14.52, qualifying for Nationals for the second time in her career. CBC also had 12 athletes selected to the AMC All-Academic Teams this spring.

That wraps up the 2020-21 sports season at CBC. Be sure to check cbcmustangs.com for exciting summer content and follow us @gocbcmustangs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

ST. LOUIS – Looking to start the second half of the American Midwest Conference schedule on a high note, Central Baptist College men’s basketball played the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State tonight at the Emerson Performance Center in the first rematch of last year’s AMC Tournament Championship game. CBC (13-4, 8-1 AMC) trailed for only 2:35 in the entire game and shot over 50 percent from the field to avenge last year’s defeat by a score of 103-88 over HSSU (1-7, 0-5 AMC).

Six Mustangs finished in double figures scoring, led by Kelvin Robinson (SR/Little Rock, Ark.). CBC shot over 50 percent from the floor in both halves and eclipsed the century mark in scoring for the third time this season.

Robinson poured in a season-best 23 points on a season-high nine made field goals

Tedrick Wolfe (SR/DeWitt, Ark.) had 20 points. Zach Hudson (SR/Jackson, Miss.) had 15 points and led the team with seven rebounds

The 103 points were the second highest total this season – the Mustangs scored 115 against Bacon on Nov. 17.

Riley Barnes led HSSU with 19 points. Marquis Pepper had a team-best six rebounds and also led with six assists

CBC returns to Reddin Fieldhouse on Friday night for their second meeting of the season with UHSP. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. with attendance limited to 150 but you can find coverage if you like and follow @gocbcmustangs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

CONWAY – Playing their first regular season game since Nov. 20, 2020, Central Baptist College women’s basketball took the floor today at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse to host the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University in their American Midwest Conference. CBC (5-1, 0-1) trailed by three in regulation, tied the game at the buzzer and ended up losing in triple overtime to MBU (7-4, 3-2 AMC) 87-81.

Holly Allen (SR/Cabot, Ark.) led the way with 20 points and three other Mustangs joined her in double figures. Grace Coates (SR/Two Rivers, Ark.) had 19 in her season debut, Alexis Augustus (SR/Baton Rouge, La.) had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Izzy Arnold (FR/Cabot, Ark.) also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Chrishey Wilkes (JR/St. Louis, Mo.) grabbed a season-best 11 rebounds on her own. Neither team led by more than seven points in a game that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes.

CBC led at the end of the first, second and third quarters by one point each time. The Lady Mustangs would extend their lead to three, 47-44 with 7:19 left in third, before the Spartans immediately tied the game on the ensuing possession. From there, MBU raced out to a 61-54 lead with 1:46 left in the game and attempted to salt it away, but CBC kept fighting, getting the lead to three points with five seconds left and allowing Coates to tie the game to send it to overtime knotted at 64.

In the first overtime, CBC led on three different occasions, including 71-69 with 20 seconds to play. A foul by Augustus with four seconds left led MBU to the free throw line, where they tied it and Augustus missed a jumper at the buzzer to send the contest to overtime number two.

MBU grabbed the lead in the second overtime, 75-71, but CBC fought back, getting a bucket from Coates with 1:29 left and a pair of Allen free throws with 41 seconds left to tie it 75. CBC would again have a chance to win it, but Allen missed a jumper to send it to a third OT.

CBC grabbed a 78-77 lead in the third overtime before the Spartans tied it with a free throw and took the lead with a layup. An Augustus jumper with 1:37 left in the contest tied the game at 80 but MBU was able to get a layup on the other and CBC couldn’t get a basket, falling by six.

The Lady Mustangs are back on the floor on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they welcome the Owls of William Woods to Reddin Fieldhouse.

CONWAY – Returning home to play less than 24 hours after their last game, Central Baptist College men’s basketball hosted the Bearcats of Rust College tonight at Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (5-3) never led, trailing by as many as 19 points early in the second half, falling to Rust (2-4) 79-74.

Tedrick Wolfe (SR/DeWitt, Ark.) led four Mustangs in double figures scoring and posted his second career double-double in the process.
Wolfe had 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. His other double-double came last February against William Woods.

TaJuan Johnson (SR/Chicago, Ill.) had 14 points off the bench and led the way in assists with four. Zach Hudson (SR/Jackson, Miss.) chipped in with 13 points and Kelvin Robinson (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) had 10 points.

Erik Holth, Sports Information Director

CONWAY – When the Central Baptist College wrestling season resumes on Jan. 8, 2021, three new faces will join the Mustangs as announced by head coach Ken Prophete. Anthony Temes, Tico Ferrer and Christian Richer will all be joining the Mustangs in the Spring.

Temes and Ferrer are joining the Mustangs from St. Thomas University in Florida while Richer is coming to CBC from Lassen Community College in California. Temes and Ferrer are both natives of Florida while Richer grew up in Sparks, Nev.

Temes will wrestle at 125 pounds and was a Florida National Team member, a two-time district champion, three-time state qualifier and a Florida High School Athletic Association state finalist. He chose CBC because of the environment and the opportunity that was presented to him and he wants to thank CBC Assistant Coach Cater, who introduced him to the sport of wrestling as a seventh grader and many others.

Ferrer will wrestle at 133 pounds. He was a fourth-place finisher in Fla., a Calif., district champion, an NCS Qualifier, a Fla., district champion and an AAU All-American. He chose CBC because of the people that are part of the wrestling program and he believes that Coach Prophete’s family atmosphere will make this team historic. He wants to thank his #1 supporter, his mother.

Richer will wrestle at 157 pounds. He was an Academic All-American at Lassen and chose CBC for the culture both in the wrestling room and on campus. He wanted to thank his parents and his wrestling coaches from Reno and Lassen. Join us in welcoming these three to the Mustang family!
