A-State Athletics

JONESBORO – Led by a career-high 31 points and game-high 10 rebounds from forward <dfn>Norchad Omier</dfn>, the Arkansas State men’s basketball team claimed an 88-66 victory over Lyon College Tuesday at First National Bank Arena to wrap up its non-conference schedule.

The Red Wolves have now won six of their last seven games to improve their record to 9-3 overall and 6-1 at home. Since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 1991-92, A-State won nine non-conference games for just the fourth time and first time since the 2016-17 season.

Omier was responsible for the most points scored by an Arkansas State player this season, making 15 field goals that were just two shy of the First National Bank Arena record. He was joined in double figures by juniors <dfn>Markise Davis</dfn> and <dfn>Desi Sills</dfn> with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Red Wolves made 40-of-74 shots for a .541 field goal percentage, while limiting the Scots to a .377 percentage and turning the ball over a season-low seven times. They also blocked a season-high seven shots and dished out 25 assists, their second most of the year, on their 40 buckets that were a season high.

The game’s first 14 minutes featured four ties and two lead changes as neither team led by more than seven points. However, with the score knotted 27-27 at the 6:06 mark, A-State put together an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take the lead for good.

The Red Wolves took a 45-35 advantage into the break before outscoring the Scots 43-31 in the second half. They opened the final 20 minutes with 22-9 run to push their lead to 67-44 with 12:58 remaining and extended the advantage to as many as 24 points.

Omier collected his seventh double-double of the season and 22nd of his career as his team-leading 10 rebounds helped A-State post a 42-31 advantage on the boards. While senior guard <dfn>Marquis Eaton</dfn> scored just six points in the game, it pushed his career total to 1,465 to move him into a tie with Chico Fletcher (1996-2000) for the seventh most in school history.

Lyon was led by two players scoring in double figures, including Ben Keton with a game-high 24 points and John Paul Morgan with 11.

Arkansas State returns to action Thursday, Dec. 30, beginning Sun Belt Conference action with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Georgia State. The contest will appear on ESPN+, and every A-State men’s basketball game can be heard live on the EAB Red Wolves Sports Network, including flagship station 107.9 FM in the Northeast Arkansas area.

PARAGOULD – The Lyon Scots had a 16-point second-half lead dwindle down to a last-second missed three-pointer in a 73-70 win over the Crowley Ridge College Pioneers on Monday night at the Carter Activities Center in Paragould.

<dfn>Grant Patterson</dfn> scored 19 points and had seven rebounds, <dfn>Trenton Bell</dfn> and <dfn>Ben Keton</dfn> both scored 15 points each and <dfn>John Paul Morgan</dfn> put in 14 points and had 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games. Lyon (5-8) made 15-of-16 free throws in the game and shot 43 percent from the field. The Scots were 4-of-16 on 3-pointers.

Morgan tied the game early with a three-point play and Bell hit a three-pointer from the right wing. Morgan completed his second traditional three-point play for a 12-5 lead and Keton tipped in a missed shot for a seven-point lead. <dfn>Jonathan Iliya</dfn> banked in a shot off a pass from Bell. Crowley’s Ridge came back to get within three points, but Bell made two baskets, <dfn>Luke Bridges</dfn> made a shot inside and Keton put in two free throws and a 3-pointer for a 27-20 lead.

Patterson made two free throws and Keton added two from the line, then Morgan scored inside for a 35-22 lead for Lyon. The Pioneers (1-13) got to within four points, but a <dfn>Gavin Brunson</dfn> passed to Keton for a dunk. Patterson added two more free throws and Brunson scored on a Euro-step move to the basket for a layup just before time expired to put the Scots up 43-33 at halftime.

Keton hit a jumper to start the scoring in the second half, then Patterson, who scored 15 points in the second half alone, got two baskets to fall on drives through the lane. Bell scored inside and Patterson put in two free throws for a 53-38 lead.

Patterson made a jumper and made two more free throws. Bell’s 3-pointer with 13:09 left to play put Lyon up by 16 points, 60-44. Iliya turned for a hook shot and Patterson scored three more points, but the Scots were outscored 12-2 by the Pioneers. A three-point play and a basket off a steal got Crowley’s Ridge to within one point, 67-66 with 5:34 to go.

Patterson scored on a drive, Morgan made a jumper and Iliya scored on a layup after Crowley’s Ridge missed two free throws to tie the game. Lyon held a 73-68 lead with 3:21 to play in the game and the Pioneers got an offensive rebound basket to cut the lead to three at the 2:51 mark.

Although neither team scored again, Crowley’s Ridge missed four 3-point attempts in the final two minutes of the game. The Pioneers’ last 3-point miss came as time expired.

Bo Roberson led Crowley’s Ridge with 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Braxton Cousins had 17 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The Lyon College volleyball team and College of the Ozarks squared off for the second time within a week on Tuesday night. After College of the Ozarks won the first meeting in four sets this past Saturday, Lyon College got the best of the Lady Bobcats in the rematch as the Scots won a five-set thriller (17-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 15-8).

The Scots improved to 7-3 with the win, while CofO fell to 5-2.

College of the Ozarks rallied back from an early 9-6 deficit in the first set and took a 21-13 against the Scots. Lyon College tried to rally back late as Maria Eleni Bampiri and Layne Smith recorded a kill each but the Lady Bobcats took set one, 25-17.

The script flipped in the second set as the Scots used an 8-1 run late in the game and took a 23-10 lead over the Lady Bobcats following a kill by Isabella Beasley. After a pair of kills by CofO, Bampiri finished off the set with a kill of her own as the Scots won game two, 25-15.

The Scots held a 13-11 lead midway through the third set but the Lady Bobcats worked their way back into the set and tied the game at 20-20. CofO finished the set on a 5-0 run and won game three, 25-20.

Once again, the Scots found themselves with a lead midway through the fourth set as a kill by Samantha Ferguson put Lyon ahead, 14-9. From there, the Lady Bobcats used a 7-0 run and overtook the lead, 16-14. The Scots were able to weather the storm and regained the lead, 17-16, on an ace by Erin Haigwood. The fourth set finished as a seesaw battle but the Scots came away with a 25-23 win to force a fifth set.

The Scots dominated the fifth set. After a kill by Paeton Tucker broke a 4-4 tie, the Scots did not look back from there and ended the set on a 10-4 run and earned a 15-8 win in the fifth set.

Ferguson and Tucker led the Scots offensively with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Adia Sherbeyn and Haigwood were both strong defensively as the duo finished with 27 and 21 digs, respectively, while Stephanie Tucker added 12 digs as well. Laney Blankenship and Layla Wilson contributed 24 and 20 assists, respectively.

The Scots will return home and host Crowley’s Ridge College on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. inside Becknell Gymnasium.

BATESVILLE – The Lyon College volleyball team looked to keep its undefeated record intact as they faced a quality opponent in Bethel (Tenn.) on Tuesday night. The Scots hung tough with the Wildcats but suffered their first loss of the season, 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 18-25).

Bethel improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Scots fell to 4-1.

With the score tied at 8-8 in the first set, Bethel began to gain some separation as the Wildcats took a 20-14 lead over the Scots. Paeton Tucker and Isabella Beasley collected a kill each late in the set for the Scots, but the Wildcats took game one, 25-18.

Neither side could gain an advantage over the other in the second set as the score remained within a point until a kill by Dominika Skoneczna gave the Wildcats a 17-15 lead. A kill by Samantha Ferguson pulled the Scots back within a point, 19-18, shortly after, but Bethel closed out the set on a 6-3 run and took game two, 25-21.

A 9-2 run by Bethel in the third set proved to be the difference in the game as the Wildcats found themselves ahead, 18-11. The Scots cut the deficit to five late in the set after a pair of errors by Bethel and a kill by Layne Smith, but a pair of kills by the Wildcats gave the visitors the three-set victory.

Natalia Szymanska led Lyon offensively with seven kills, while Adia Sherbeyn highlighted the Scots defensively with a team-high 10 digs. Layla Wilson dished out a team-high 13 assists.

The Scots will return to action this weekend as they will host the Highlander Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Scots will open up their two-day invitational on Friday at 2 p.m. against Centenary College.

LITTLE ROCK – The Lyon College volleyball team ended its stay at the Philander Smith College Tournament with a pair of sweeps over Wiley College and Jarvis Christian College on Saturday afternoon.

With the two wins, the Scots improved their record to 4-0 to begin the season.

Match One: Lyon 3, Wiley College 0 (27-25, 25-22, 28-26)

The Scots came away with a win in three tightly-contested sets to begin the day against Wiley College. Lyon and Wiley kept the first set within two points the entire way as a block by Charm Henderson and Maria Eleni Bampiri broke a 25-25 tie and gave the Scots a one-point lead. Layla Wilson finished off the set with an ace as the Scots took game one, 27-25.

The Scots found themselves trailing, 13-9, midway through the second set before a kill by Samantha Ferguson tied the score at 16-16. The momentum shifted in the Scots’ favor from there as Lyon pulled ahead, 24-17, on a kill by Paeton Tucker. WC made things interesting late, however, and pulled back within three, 24-21, before Bampiri put down a kill and gave the Scots a 25-21 win in set two.

Lyon looked as if it would run away with the third set as the Scots jumped out to a 9-4 lead on a kill by Tucker but Wiley College pulled its way back into the set and tied the score a 24-24. The two teams went on to exchange the lead but a kill by Henderson and an attack error by WC sealed the victory for the Scots.

Szymanska led the Scots offensively with a match-high 12 kills, while Adia Sherbeyn collected a match-high 13 digs. Layla Wilson dished out a match-high 21 assists in the win for the Scots.

Match Two: Lyon 3, Jarvis Christian College (25-12, 25-14, 27-25)

Lyon College ran away with the first two sets, winning by scores of 25-12 and 25-14, but Jarvis Christian kept it close against the Scots in the third set. The Scots found themselves with a comfortable, 15-9, lead, but JCC worked its way back into the set and overtook the lead, 18-17. Jarvis Christian extended its lead to 24-20 but the Scots came up with a rally of their own and knotted the score at 24-24. The two teams traded a point each before a kill by Henderson and Katelyn Vanlandingham gave the Scots a 27-25 win in the third set.

Szymanska once again led the Scots with a match-high eight kills while Isabella Beasley added seven. Sherbeyn totaled a match-high eight digs, while Erin Haigwood added six digs. Wilson and Laney Blankenship finished with 19 and 17 assists, respectively.

The Scots will return to the court on Tuesday when they take on Bethel in their home opener at 6 p.m.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – In what was a highly anticipated matchup between the 22nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team and (RV) Columbia College, the game lived up to the hype, as the Scots knocked off the Cougars, 64-58, on the road on Tuesday night.

Lyon moved into sole possession of first place in the American Midwest Conference standings as the Scots improved to 5-0 (5-0 AMC), while CC fell to 7-3 (5-1 AMC).

It was a game of runs between the Scots and Cougars as Columbia erased a 4-3 deficit and went on a 10-0 run to take a 13-4 lead midway through the first period. It was the Scots turn for their run after that as Lyon ended the quarter on a 13-0 run and took led, 17-13, after the first period.

A three-pointer by Jade Giron opened up the scoring in the second quarter as Lyon continued their run and extended their lead to 27-13 with 5:20 remaining. A jumper by Columbia’s Mallory Shetley at the 3:28 mark ended a 12-minute scoring drought for the Cougars. The Scots continued to hold a double-digit lead until a three-pointer by the Cougars cut the deficit to seven before a jumper by Paige Tate gave Lyon a 33-24 lead at the half.

Columbia opened up the third quarter on a 7-0 run and pulled within two, 33-31, just under four minutes in. The Scots continued to hold off the Cougars until Columbia knotted the score at 40-40 on a pair of free throws. A layup by Giron gave the Scots a two-point lead momentarily, but CC ended the quarter on a 7-0 run and took a 47-42 lead into the fourth period.

CC extended its lead to 49-42 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter but Lyon rallied back and took a 50-49 lead on a bucket by Giron. It was a seesaw battle between the Scots and Cougars over the next three minutes until a layup by Katie Turner gave Lyon a 57-56 lead with 2:32 left to play. The Scots would not surrender their lead the rest of the way as a free throw by Marleigh Dodson with 12 seconds left gave Lyon a six-point victory.

Giron scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead all scorers. Kelley recorded the first double-double of her career as she finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Scots will return home and host the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
