COLUMBIA, Mo. – In what was a highly anticipated matchup between the 22nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team and (RV) Columbia College, the game lived up to the hype, as the Scots knocked off the Cougars, 64-58, on the road on Tuesday night.

Lyon moved into sole possession of first place in the American Midwest Conference standings as the Scots improved to 5-0 (5-0 AMC), while CC fell to 7-3 (5-1 AMC).

It was a game of runs between the Scots and Cougars as Columbia erased a 4-3 deficit and went on a 10-0 run to take a 13-4 lead midway through the first period. It was the Scots turn for their run after that as Lyon ended the quarter on a 13-0 run and took led, 17-13, after the first period.

A three-pointer by Jade Giron opened up the scoring in the second quarter as Lyon continued their run and extended their lead to 27-13 with 5:20 remaining. A jumper by Columbia’s Mallory Shetley at the 3:28 mark ended a 12-minute scoring drought for the Cougars. The Scots continued to hold a double-digit lead until a three-pointer by the Cougars cut the deficit to seven before a jumper by Paige Tate gave Lyon a 33-24 lead at the half.

Columbia opened up the third quarter on a 7-0 run and pulled within two, 33-31, just under four minutes in. The Scots continued to hold off the Cougars until Columbia knotted the score at 40-40 on a pair of free throws. A layup by Giron gave the Scots a two-point lead momentarily, but CC ended the quarter on a 7-0 run and took a 47-42 lead into the fourth period.

CC extended its lead to 49-42 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter but Lyon rallied back and took a 50-49 lead on a bucket by Giron. It was a seesaw battle between the Scots and Cougars over the next three minutes until a layup by Katie Turner gave Lyon a 57-56 lead with 2:32 left to play. The Scots would not surrender their lead the rest of the way as a free throw by Marleigh Dodson with 12 seconds left gave Lyon a six-point victory.

Giron scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead all scorers. Kelley recorded the first double-double of her career as she finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Scots will return home and host the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

ST. LOUIS– No. 22 Lyon College women’s basketball freshman forward Paige Kelley was named as the American Midwest Conference Player of the Week after helping the Scots to a pair of conference wins last week. This is her first-career AMC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award.

The Scots defeated Stephens College, 77-35, last Thursday, before earning a 56-47 comeback victory against William Woods on Saturday. It was the Paige Kelley show for the Scots in their two games last week after the freshman posted a pair of career-highs. Kelley got her monster week started with a career-high 25 points in the win against Stephens. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists, while shooting 10-of-16 from the floor.

Kelley followed that up with a new career-high of 28 points in the win against the Owls. She also finished with eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals, while going 13-of-15 from the floor.
CONWAY – Playing their first regular season game since Nov. 20, 2020, Central Baptist College women’s basketball took the floor today at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse to host the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University in their American Midwest Conference. CBC (5-1, 0-1) trailed by three in regulation, tied the game at the buzzer and ended up losing in triple overtime to MBU (7-4, 3-2 AMC) 87-81.

Holly Allen (SR/Cabot, Ark.) led the way with 20 points and three other Mustangs joined her in double figures. Grace Coates (SR/Two Rivers, Ark.) had 19 in her season debut, Alexis Augustus (SR/Baton Rouge, La.) had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Izzy Arnold (FR/Cabot, Ark.) also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Chrishey Wilkes (JR/St. Louis, Mo.) grabbed a season-best 11 rebounds on her own. Neither team led by more than seven points in a game that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes.

CBC led at the end of the first, second and third quarters by one point each time. The Lady Mustangs would extend their lead to three, 47-44 with 7:19 left in third, before the Spartans immediately tied the game on the ensuing possession. From there, MBU raced out to a 61-54 lead with 1:46 left in the game and attempted to salt it away, but CBC kept fighting, getting the lead to three points with five seconds left and allowing Coates to tie the game to send it to overtime knotted at 64.

In the first overtime, CBC led on three different occasions, including 71-69 with 20 seconds to play. A foul by Augustus with four seconds left led MBU to the free throw line, where they tied it and Augustus missed a jumper at the buzzer to send the contest to overtime number two.

MBU grabbed the lead in the second overtime, 75-71, but CBC fought back, getting a bucket from Coates with 1:29 left and a pair of Allen free throws with 41 seconds left to tie it 75. CBC would again have a chance to win it, but Allen missed a jumper to send it to a third OT.

CBC grabbed a 78-77 lead in the third overtime before the Spartans tied it with a free throw and took the lead with a layup. An Augustus jumper with 1:37 left in the contest tied the game at 80 but MBU was able to get a layup on the other and CBC couldn’t get a basket, falling by six.

The Lady Mustangs are back on the floor on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they welcome the Owls of William Woods to Reddin Fieldhouse.

BATESVILLE – For the second time in as many contests, freshman Paige Kelley scored at least 25 points in a game. After dropping a career-high 25 points on Thursday night, she surpassed that total with a new career-high of 28 points on Saturday as the 22nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team earned a 56-47 win against William Woods.

The Scots moved to 4-0 (4-0 American Midwest Conference) with the win, while WWU fell to 1-4 (1-4 AMC).

The first two quarters were tightly contested between the Scots and Owls as Lyon took a 16-14 lead after the first quarter before trailing at the half, 30-26.

In the third quarter, WWU extended its lead to 40-32 before a three-pointer by Blysse Harmon sparked a big rally from the Scots. Kelley scored the next two buckets for the Scots before a layup in transition by Mari-Hanna Newsom pulled Lyon within one, 42-41, at the end of the third quarter.

The Scots continued to find success on the offensive end of the court and opened up the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run after a pair of free throws by Kelley gave the Scots a 50-42 lead with 6:32 left to play. After a score by the Owls, The Scots responded with back-to-back buckets by Kelley and Turner to push their lead to 54-44. WWU cut the Scots’ lead to seven with a three but a layup by Klaudija Bacovic proved to be the final score of the game.

The Scots will return to action on Tuesday night for a highly-anticipated matchup at (RV) Columbia College at 5:30 p.m.

HANNIBAL, Mo. – Opening American Midwest Conference play tonight, Central Baptist College volleyball took on Hannibal-LaGrange at the Mabee Sports Complex. CBC (4-2) took care of business, beating HLGU (0-1) 3-2, (14-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 15-8) to earn their first win ever over the Trojans.

Khyra Echols (SR/Dallas, Texas) led the way with 19 kills while Lena Srdanov (SR/Serbia) had her second straight double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs. Molly Murphy (FR/Palm Springs, Calif.) and Taylor Folsom (SO/North Little Rock, Ark.) both had 18 assists and Alizea Garza (SR/Odessa, Texas) led the way with 20 digs. CBC had 43 kills, compared to 36 for HLGU and hit .066 with six aces (four by Chandee Wesley (SO/Jacksonville, Ark.)) and five total blocks.

HLGU took the early lead in set one, but the teams went back and forth for the first 21 rallies, leading 11-10. The Trojans then won three straight points to lead 14-10 and CBC never got within two the rest of the set. CBC won the first two points of set two as the two teams then traded points until CBC led 16-15. That started a string of eight straight points for the Mustangs that included back-to-back-to-back aces from Wesley and they cruised to the second set win.

HLGU led the entire third set until the final two points when Echols killed a ball and a set error by the Trojans gave CBC the win. The Mustangs trailed all but three points in the fourth set, setting up a fifth and deciding set.

CBC began the fifth set winning the first five points and cruised to a 15-8 win and their first ever defeat of Hannibal-LaGrange.

BATESVILLE – The 11th-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team capped off its 2019-20 regular season in stunning fashion as the Scots defeated No. 15 Columbia College, 77-60, on Saturday afternoon inside Becknell Gymnasium. Following the game, the Scots honored their two seniors – Liz Henderson and Madison Riley – as part of the Senior Day recognition.

The Scots finished the regular season at 27-3 (23-1 American Midwest Conference). The 27 wins tied the 2012-13 team for the most wins in the regular season, while the 23 conference victories are the most in a season in program history.

The Scots and Cougars kept the score close all throughout the first quarter until a bucket by Madison Riley gave the Scots a 9-8 lead with 1:58 remaining. From there, The Scots began to take over as Marleigh Dodson split a pair of free throws before Riley and Liz Henderson added a bucket each to extend the lead to 14-8. CC ended the run with a basket in the paint by Ukari McKinney before Haley Wesley gave the Scots a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.

It was all Lyon in the second quarter as the Scots outscored the Cougars, 27-14, in the period. A pair of free throws by Katie Turner with 30 seconds remaining gave the Scots their largest lead of the half at 43-24.

Kristen Baham knocked down a triple to open up the third quarter and pushed the Scots lead to 46-24 before CC cut the deficit in half over the next six minutes. The Scots ended the period with a three-pointer by Alexis Moore and a layup by Henderson and took a 56-40 advantage into the final quarter.

CC cut the deficit to 11 twice in the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as the Cougars would get as the Scots ended the game on a 6-0 run and earned a 77-60 win.

Riley recorded a double-double and just missed out on a triple-double as she finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to go along with eight assists. Henderson chipped in 14 points, while Turner and Jade Giron finished with 10 points each.

The Scots will open the AMC Championship as the No. 1-seed and will host No. 8-seed Central Baptist College on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
