BATESVILLE – For the second time in as many contests, freshman Paige Kelley scored at least 25 points in a game. After dropping a career-high 25 points on Thursday night, she surpassed that total with a new career-high of 28 points on Saturday as the 22nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team earned a 56-47 win against William Woods.

The Scots moved to 4-0 (4-0 American Midwest Conference) with the win, while WWU fell to 1-4 (1-4 AMC).

The first two quarters were tightly contested between the Scots and Owls as Lyon took a 16-14 lead after the first quarter before trailing at the half, 30-26.

In the third quarter, WWU extended its lead to 40-32 before a three-pointer by Blysse Harmon sparked a big rally from the Scots. Kelley scored the next two buckets for the Scots before a layup in transition by Mari-Hanna Newsom pulled Lyon within one, 42-41, at the end of the third quarter.

The Scots continued to find success on the offensive end of the court and opened up the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run after a pair of free throws by Kelley gave the Scots a 50-42 lead with 6:32 left to play. After a score by the Owls, The Scots responded with back-to-back buckets by Kelley and Turner to push their lead to 54-44. WWU cut the Scots’ lead to seven with a three but a layup by Klaudija Bacovic proved to be the final score of the game.

The Scots will return to action on Tuesday night for a highly-anticipated matchup at (RV) Columbia College at 5:30 p.m.

Erik Holth, Sports Information Director

FULTON, Mo. – Coming off their first sweep of a nationally ranked opponent on Tuesday, Central Baptist College continued their current six-game American Midwest Conference road trip by visiting the Owls of William Woods today. CBC (13-10, 6-0 AMC) stayed perfect early in the AMC schedule, sweep the Owls (5-12, 0-2 AMC) 8-3 & 7-3.

Kym House (JR/Jacksonville, Ark.) and Rachel Gregory (JR/North Little Rock, Ark.) drew the starting assignments for CBC. The Mustangs pounded out four extra base hits in each game, including a Rachael Jones (JR/Conway, Ark.) home run, the only homer of the sweep for CBC.

GAME ONE – CBC 7, WILLIAM WOODS 3

The Mustangs jumped on the Owls early, scoring three in the first on singles by Jones and Kaylee St. John(SR/Conway, Ark.) to lead 3-0 after a half inning. William Woods cut it to 3-1 in the bottom half and trailed just 3-2 after two. CBC added another run in the third when Jones smashed her first home run of the season, a solo shot, over the left field fence to make it 4-2 after three. William Woods cut the deficit back to one at 4-3 in the fifth, but CBC put the game away in the seventh, scoring three times on a bases clearing triple by Katie Gordon (SO/Beebe, Ark.) to make it 7-3. House would allow a hit in the ninth, but the Owls couldn’t get a threat going and the game ended. House earned the win, throwing a complete game, scattering three runs (one earned) and nine hits with five strikeouts. Jones and Gordon both had a pair of hits and three RBIs apiece.

GAME TWO – CBC 8, WILLIAM WOODS 3

William Woods grabbed the early lead in game two, scoring twice in the first off Gregory to lead 2-0 after one. The Mustangs offense would strike in the third and grab a 3-2 lead courtesy of a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double by Allison Seats (SO/Jacksonville, Ark.). William Woods tied the game in the bottom half, but CBC grabbed the lead for good in the fifth.

After a pair of walks sandwiched around a flyout, Gordon smoked a double to deep left-center to score Bri Nunn (SR/Missouri City, Texas) and Seats and make it 5-3. The Mustangs would take on three more in the ninth on a two-run double by Jones and an RBI groundout by St. John to bring the score to its final margin. Gregory was the starter, going three innings and allowing five hits and three runs, earning a no-decision. Brooke Trout (SO/Blytheville, Ark.) got the win, going the final four innings and allowing just two hits while striking out one.

UP NEXT

CBC Sports
Erik Holth, Sports Information Director

CONWAY – Carrying momentum from an offensive outburst against Ecclesia, Central Baptist College softball took the field today against American Midwest Conference foe William Woods on Senior Day. CBC (20-17, 7-7 AMC) would split with the Owls (20-16, 11-5 AMC), dropping game one 12-6 but winning game two 8-7.

Five seniors, Gabrielle Mueller (SR/Taylor Ridge, Ill.), Hunter Clark (SR/Sheridan, Ark.), Beth Jones (SR/Hope, Ark.), Allison Skelton (SR/Prairie Grove, Ark.) and Madison Skelton (SR/Prairie Grove, Ark.) were honored in between games. Kymberlie House (SO/Jacksonville, Ark.) started in game one and got a no decision while Rachel Gregory (SO/North Little Rock, Ark.) was the game two starter, also receiving a no decision. Baleigh Jackson (FR/Monticello, Ark.) hit the only Mustang home run of the day, which sparked the offense in the game two win.

GAME ONE – WWU 12, CBC 6

CBC jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first, thanks to three walks and a wild pitch that scored Alyssa Estrada(SO/Houston, Texas). William Woods would grab a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a home run and increased the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third. The Mustangs would tie the game in the bottom half on back-to-back bases-loaded singles by Clark and Jackson to score Allison Seats (FR/Jacksonville, Ark.) and Rachael Jones (SO/Conway, Ark.). The Owls responded by scoring five in the top of the fourth off reliever Madison Skelton, only to see the Mustangs chip away in the bottom half, scoring three times on back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Kaylee St. John (JR/Conway, Ark.) and Clark and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jackson. That would be as close as the Mustangs would get, however, as William Woods put the game out of reach with a grand slam in the seventh to take the game to its final score. House started and went three innings, surrendering four hits and three runs with three walks and a strikeout. Skelton would pick up the loss, allowing 12 hits and nine runs (five earned) in four innings with four Ks.

GAME TWO – CBC 8, WWU 7

Game two began differently, with Woods jumping out to a 5-0 lead after 3.5 innings off Gregory and House, who relieved Gregory and recorded two outs in the contest. CBC would respond, however, powering their way to six runs to take a 6-5 lead after four. Clark led off the inning by reaching on an error and she scored on Jackson’s two-run home run, her fourth of the season. A walk to Mueller and hits by Brianna Nunn (JR/Missouri City, Texas) and Beth Jones loaded the bases and allowed Kaitlyn Goike (FR/Magnolia, Texas) to earn an RBI on a walk to make it 5-3. Nunn would then score on a fielder’s choice by Seats to cut the deficit to one and pinch-hitter Cali Lankford (JR/Perryville, Ark.) blasted a two-run double to right-center to give CBC their first lead of the doubleheader. Single runs in the fifth and sixth gave the Mustangs much needed insurance runs as reliever Brooke Trout (FR/Blytheville, Ark.) allowed two runs in the seventh, but got out of a jam to secure the win. House earned the game two victory, recording two outs. Gregory, the starter threw 3.1 innings and allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out one. Trout earned the save, pitching three innings and scattering eight hits with just the two runs while also striking out a batter.

UP NEXT

CBC will host Park tomorrow in the AMC Game of the Week. First pitch for the doubleheader with the Pirates is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Owls trailed through three quarters, but opened the final stanza scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the period to knot the game at 54-apiece. Bailey Rollins’ basket gave WWU (22-11) its first lead of the game at 56-54.

From there the pace slowed and Baily Cameron’s three-pointer with 1:22 remaining put JBU (23-9) back on top, 61-58, and looked to give the Lady Eagles the momentum back. But 30 seconds later, Peyton Greenlee countered with a three of her own and the game was again tied.

Then Rollins stole the ball and WWU had the ball for the final possession. Kelsey Scherder drained a three-pointer with one second left on the clock and the Owls completed the comeback.

Scherder had 19 points on the night, a team high. Greenlee had 17 more and each had six rebounds.

Cameron led the way for JBU with 21 points and eight boards. Luize Skrastina put in 13 for the Lady Eagles.

With back-to-back upsets under its belt, William Woods moves into the quarterfinal to face the winner of Vanguard (Calif.) and Montana State-Northern on Saturday at 9 p.m. CDT.
